I'm going to wool - even when my UA didn't stink I couldn't stand the feel of it.  I get a chilled feeling while wearing it even though I'm warm, it's evaporating moisture like it should but I hate the feeling of it  :chuckle:

Certain synthetics used in base layers absorb oil and associated odors and you can't really wash it out (even though it may smell fresh out of the wash, just add moisture and heat and it will smell ripe). One material in particular, polypropylene, is used in cleaning up ocean oil spills because of its absorbing properties.

This is why two tablespoons of dawn dish soap used on the soak cycle works.  It breaks down the oils.  Read about "stripping" stinky clothing/cloth diapers.

You dont have to do it every time, about every third or fourth wash.

Something I noticed with the UA type stuff is that they absorb scents from our washer. We have the side load high efficient washer and noticed that that particular design promotes mold for what ever reason.  We use the special cleaner for it  to get rid of it , but I can always tell when that washer needs to be cleaned by the smell of my UA shirts.  They seem to smell way before the other clothing does.

I wear black UA under shirts at work everyday and use oxycleen when I was them.  Seems to work for me.
