Nock orientation for whisker biscuit

I"m about to buy some new arrows since i only have a couple left from the last dozen and they're pretty ragged looking. any way i was shooting these last ones cock fletch down because they came that way, but i was curious as to other peoples position on nock orientation when shooting the whisker biscuit. Other details about my set up: late 90's martin cougar magnum 72lbs, whisker biscuit, finger shooter, 30" cabelas fall stalkers 65/80, 125 gr tips, i shoot magnus stingers when hunting.

I was always told to shoot a whisker biscuit, cock fletch up.  Something about you don't want the fletching to pass through the black part of the biscuit.

3 fletch, odd fletch goes up so that all fletchings make the same amount of contact with the biscuit.  If you go odd fletch down, 1 fletching passes through the gap in the biscuit.   

4 fletch, obviously there's no odd fletch and it makes no difference.


That's what I was taught and use anyway, YMMV.

On my daughters I took my fly tying scissors and trimmed a couple rows of whiskers all the way to where they attach, right where the fletching would hit them. Now it still holds the arrow just fine but the fletching goes through without resistance.

Cool thing about three fletched arrows.  You can turn the nock 180 degrees and your cock vane is up

The black bristles are stiffer and more dense than the brown ones.  By using cock vane up and rotating the nock slightly if needed all vanes will pass through the same density and stiffness of bristles allowing the arrow to pass through the center of the hole rather than out of center.  On older styles you would not have enough clearance for Blazer vanes or similar with cock down due to the flat mount below the black.  That really rips up some fletching in a hurry.

Rather than spending 60 - 80 dollars on a hairy hole just to cut it up with scissors try looking at the Octane Hostage Pro.  If your sight is not mounted too low I think it is a much better option.  When traveling hundreds of miles away from the nearest pro-shop it is my rest of choice.  Can fix or replace everything on it with just three small hex wrenches.
