Anyone use a TC
« on: September 13, 2008, 10:21:27 PM »
I sure have seen the single shot TC gun used in a lot of different hunting shows lately. It is a good looking gun. Anyone ever used one or have one? What do you think of it? Any drawback with it?

I don't have the rifle but have a TC Contender that I have used to shoot several antelope and mule deer. Quality gun and no doubt that the rifle is the same. Just make sure you are ready for a single shot weapon and choose the correct caliber for your needs and you will be happy.

I hunt with an encore .223 for coyotes. I love the rifle it carries easy and is an easily minute of coyote acurrate rifle. I would like to add a barrel for larger game thinking either 7mm-08 or maybe 338 federal. JB

My father and I have matching contender pistol frames with a myriad of calibers.
Extremely accurate, and a ton of fun if you're into wildcats and reloading.

The newer generation has a better (stronger) reciever.
I would only buy one licensed as a pistol, though...simple because you can still put a buttstock and longer barrel on and use it as a rifle. The other way around is illegal.

There's something soothing about shooting a single shot, IMHO.

I like a few others that have already posted have the contender models with several barrels, grips, buttstocks, etc. I did own an encore but it was too heavy for my little girl so I traded it for the contender without ever firing it. All well made and you can get even more accurate barrels in many different chamberings from aftermarket sources.

TC company says that no rifle leaves the plant with less than a 5 lb. trigger, (sucks), pressure on the forearm can change groups dramatically. Hinge pins can be a problem, fit is critical. I like the idea, but, the idea is not carried out. $650-700 for a rifle that needs work, compared to a Tikka??????? Why?

Ditto.
Our contender pistols  are over 25yrs old...and have seen a TON of use.
We've had ZERO problems with hinge pins, and the triggers are DEFINITELY much lighter that 5lbs--but then again, these were MFG'd well before our current "lawyer happy" firearms.

As for forend pressure...
None of ours are temperamental enough to cause more than .5" change at 100yds...two seconds with a torqe wrench (inch lbs) or counting turns is enough to resolve that problem.
Besides, lots of other firearms (especially rimfires and low end bolt action centerfires) are also very temperamental with action screws...or barrel channel contact/floating...etc.

I think the T/C's are a great firearm, but they might not meet the needs of everyone.
Personally, I'm a one shot needed type thinker/hunter. I don't like to make risky shots.
I'm also kind of an accuracy junky.
The T/C's fit my needs perfectly.

I shoot an encore in .204 at coyoyes and like the gun.  I have the heavy barrel which is a bit much for long hikes, and the trigger guard pokes me in the back when it hanging on my shoulder.  I still carry it and shoot lots of song dogs at pretty long range.

I have wanted a Contender for years just never got serious enough. My bro really wants one of those T/C Pro-Hunters in Camo. They look like a good firearm and the versatility is awesome.

I have thought about selling or trading my Tikka T3 for one, since I already have another bolt gun.  I like the idea of changing barrels and the single shot does not bother me to much.  I can reload my wife's single shot 243 almost as quick as I would need.  Just keep the bullets in a case on the stock and it is pretty quick with practice.

I have been reading and looking at these lately. I find the idea very interesting. I have read enough to know that there is apparently some problems, with some rifles, but then most new guns now days need work to shoot the best. The single shot does not bother me. The caliber I am looking at is 204, Bullberry Barrels tested one cutting the barrel down an inch at a time and found that the 23 inch length was perfect for that cartridge. There is some good information at that site. I found three sites that offer custom work on them. You can get a forearm that is "rail" mounted which is supposed to "free float" the barrel, eliminating any forearm pressure problem, if there is one.
I still have a tough time in my head when I can buy another Tikka for 600.00 stainless T3, but I do have several Tikkas now. :dunno: so Maybe?? I had an Encore several years ago, it was ok. hhmmmmmmmmmmm what to do? I think at Sportsmans warehouse the pistol action and grips goes for 349.00, rifle stocks and a barrel look to run about 500.00 or a tad more. Bull Berry sells a kit for tightening the hinge pin, a trigger spring kit and a spring to tighten the lock up,  a set of spring tool pliers, also the dial indicator and feeler guages for head space etc. it is 100.00
Is the TC muzzle loader legal here in Washington?
maybe I better go look at another one today??

Bofire,
TC's do not meet the requirement of percussion caps that are exposed to the elements. I am also thinking they use 209 ignition, again not legal.
