Anyone have a 25WSM? Want info on the cartrage.
« on: September 18, 2008, 09:38:24 AM »
Never shot one or even had much of an interest but seems like a good deer varmit cartrage. Any input would be great. I couldnt find any shells on the shelves so it seems like a tuff one to find rounds for, but as long as I can get brass I will reload anyway.

I think the problem was it really didn't offer much of an improvement over the 25-06, so not sure it has really developed a popularity.  It would still however offer a short action, shorter barreled and possibly lighter alternative to the 25-06.  Also, isn't the 25 a WSSM?

Only the .25 WSSM was produced. Any .25 WSMs were strictly wildcats. The .25 WSSM has a hard time running with the .25-06... it's more like a modern .257AI.

I also was looking at the 25 WSSM and ended up going with the 25-06 on the pure fact that there is a much larger availability on different bullet weights and brands.  If you reload, that may not be a factor.  I do love my 25-06 though.

I thought the 25 was a wssm, a 25wsm in a wildcat would have to approach 257 weatherby velocities I would think out of a short action.  I would think that would be a pretty hot little number.

It must have been the wssm then, the guy at cabelas probably mis-read the stamp that I didnt read myself. It was a browning A-bolt hunter, nice and compact and light. The wife is looking for a new gun.

Charlie, not for nuthin, but I have the 325wsm in the Browning A-bolt stainless stalker and my huntin buddy has the same gun in 300wsm.  Both shoot very well, I get 1.25" 5 shot groups outta mine with factory 200gr Accubonds and ring the 16" gong with  regularity at 500 yards with it at our local range.  I am very happy with the gun, and I think that gun in the 25 wssm would be a great deer gun, and with 120gr tsx would take care of bulls even the size of yours  :drool:with good shot placement.  Gun is nice and light and comes to the shoulder quite well.

I always wonder why the 25 wssm was even produced?  Isn't the 260 Rem equal in ballistics and it is a short action cartridge......I just can't see what the 25 wssm has that the .260 rem can't do.  A rifle chambered in 260 probably also holds more cartridges than one chambered in 25 wssm.  That said, I don't see hardly any rifles made these days that are chambered in 260 rem or 25 wssm........It seems like if you want a short action deer cartrige you have to go with a .308 or 7mm-08 with most manufacturers.
May I always be the kind of person my dog thinks I am.

If that A-Bolt was in 308 we would have came home with it for sure ;) or even possibly 243. I just dont know about the WSSM, I pulled one of them cartridges out of the box and couldnt stop lauphing, it looked like my fat little ol' grandma with a pin head  :chuckle:

The 25WSM is a wildcat. That writer Buck Pope built one up and called it the 25 pronghorn. Claims to equal or beat 257 Wetherby in a shorter case. Personally I wished they would have went went a 6.5 cal on the WSM, but they didnt. I do think the 25WSSM is a nice idea but I dont think we'll see it around for very long, with the 25/06,257WM and the 257AI already doing the job that this one was supposed to do. Just my  :twocents:
