Toutle Cow Tag
« on: January 13, 2013, 02:40:35 PM »
My dad, two brothers and I had cow tags for this hunt this year and decided that it would be the year that my older brother got a elk. We finally got to go out last weekend and first light tried to get ahold of my brother and dad who were in another truck and couldn't so finally went ahead and shot my cow. 275 yds with a 338 Mark V shotting Hornady SST's. Dropped like a ton of bricks. Very healthy, no hoof rot, lots of fat and easy pull to the road. Hunted rest of the day and see elk but could never get another shot and brother was pretty bummed. Sunday morning we all get together and take off my younger brother and I go one way and dad and older go the other. We are just dinking around and find 5 cows at 175 yds so younger brother shots his with my gun and we call dad and old brother and they come help haul and gut. Decided older brother and me should drive around and younger brother and dad should drive around. Of course dad finds a elk and shots it so we are now just down to older brothers elk.
This saturday we go out and first thing off the bat we get stuck in about 2ft of snow and decide to hunt lower. Come around a corner and I spot 7 cows and calves at 246 yds. Get Kevin lined up and boom no flinch or nothing. Elk take off I go over and follow tracks in snow for about a mile and no slowing down and no blood at all. Clean miss. :bash:  So Kevin is really bummed now but we are keeping his hopes up drive around for about 1hr and dad spots 4 elk on the other side of canyon. We slowly drive over and find elk track everywhere. Come around a corner and find 4 cows on a side hill. Brother jumps out and grabs 338 and heads off to find clean shot and good rest. BOOM... first shot a little low but she is hit hard. Next shot BOOOM elk drops. YESSSS.. My brother killed a elk when he was still in high school and we lived in Wyoming. Since then nothing :sry: He is 49 now and is walking on cloud nine. 32 years between elk. He never complained he went out every year and was always the first one up.
My brother has had a lot of difficulties in his life from epilepsy, to back surgery, to alot of other mental, physical disabilities. SO  Congrats Kevin. You did awesome.

Way to go!! Congrats, did any of those cows have the hoof rot? Your weekend was better than the hawk fans that's for sure.
