Cougar Wrecks My Cage, Eats My Bobcat
« on: January 13, 2013, 03:35:08 PM »
So today I go to check one of my bobcat cages that is under a rock overhang on a steeep slope and see a cougar bounding away. No mistake, big cat, long tail, easy to see on the snow covered hillside as it ran away. All I have with me is my .22 pistol.  Holy S@#&! I look at my cage (one of Mercer Lawing's) and it is on its side partially open and looking trashed.  Then I see a  bloody lump with spots.  Crap!  So the Cougar mauled my trap and dragged out and ate the bobcat.  Not much left of the bobcat pelt and the head had one eye bulging out so I knew the skull was crushed too.  I'm kinda pissed that I lose the bobcat; I'll have to write to Mercer and complain that his traps aren't Cougar-proof, LOL.  But seriously that has to be one of the coolest things that I've seen in the outdoors while by myself.  Then I realize that cat had to have heard me  crunching down the ridge for quite a while.  Did he know I was human by the noises I made and stay-put?.  He either thought he could stay there and hide or he was planning to defend his kill from me.  I'm glad he changed his plan and bolted AWAY from me.  Also glad I told my Golden Retriever to wait for me up on the logging road. I know some of you won't believe me so I'll try to post pictures

Are you gonna start carrying something a bit bigger than a .22 now?
By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

That is crazy! I always thought they would be good in the cage. I carry my .40 and a big stick. The stick for what's in the trap the .40 for what's not!

I haven't lost one out of a cage but have had several taken out of foot traps. They usually just leave the leg and eat everything else. Sucks! That's for sure.

If cougar season is still open there I would use the rest of that bob for bait at the same location and try to get that cougar.  :bfg:

Damn that sucks... you think the bobcat would have a good chance of staying alive if he stayed in the cage and fought back.

See that kinda makes me wonder. Being as I cant carry a firearm, What would be the safest thing for me to do in a situation like that? Crazy, Kinda scarey bro. Im not sure a bear would be as quick to run away from his "kill". Glad your safe man.

Yeah but one long couger arm reaching in smacking a whole bobcat around. Im sure he smacked around the cage alittle first and made the bobcat confused to say the least.

Yeah I guess. Ive never seen either in the wild face to face so I cant say what Id worry about more. My girlfriends dad told me stories of when he used to go up by okanagan and hunt deer in the snow. He told me of numerous times where he would track around in a circle and find out that theres couger tracks stalking him, walking right in his footsteps.  Kinda freaky. Reminds you that your not at the top of the food chain out there. Definetly have the potential to be though!

Real question. Is that almost a guarantee? If there was a predator in the area that they will more then likely step foot back on the same ground?
