I could use any info on bears anyone is willing to share, I got the berries part. Is there a better time? I hear people talking about calls...I have called in the song dogs before, is it the same calls? Tree stand or blind preffered?

Time - I have noticed bears are about unpredictable as far as I can tell. Meaning they show up morning, afternoon and night. Even on hot days..

I think what you need to do first is just find a place that has the food and which might look like good bear habitat (water and far away from people). Then if you see fresh bear sign just develop your own method for bear hunting. I highly doubt there is a consensus on a preferred method to hunt bears. Whether that is calling, spot and stalk, treestands, road trolling or a mix of those... I prefer to spot and stalk animals a significant distance from roads. People have a lot of success with treestands and even calling or just glassing clear cuts... I have not had any good responses from calling. I had one get hung up in the brush and would not come out before when I was calling.

Here is an article on calling bears - http://hunting-washington.com/calling-bears.htm

Wish I could tell ya the magic formula.  I've only gotten 4 bears over about a 10 year period.  2 were chance encounters on opening day deer season in CA.  1 was w/dogs in CA.  Lastly was still hunting in WA in a spring hunt.  The only sure thing thing is time spent in the woods = better chances.  Good Luck!!!  PS-don't believe the stories of bad tasting bear meat.  Get it cooled, cut off all fat & enjoy!!!  Put it in the freezer & pull it out in winter when yer bored & make all kinds of great sausage!!! BKR has a fantastic bear roast recipe.
