Had to work up a round
« on: October 08, 2008, 11:44:11 AM »
I went looking for some ammo and couldn't find what I normally shot deer with (nosler AB/BT). A box of rem or federals was $40-60+ and all I found was cor locks or partitions. So I decided to try and get a load worked up before deer season. I'm shooting a 338 win and I had pickup some 200gr CT Nosler ballistic tips so I was part way there. I spent a few days on line and look though reloading books to see what powder looked good and settled on IMR 4350. I spent the first part of this week getting the cases ready, and this morning I went out and started to test some loads. I started at 69.6gr of powder and shot about a 4-5" group :yike:, then I started up the scale and at 71gr of powder I got about a 3" group. I got to 73.5gr of powder(.5gr under max) and shot about a .75" group and have no signs of pressure :IBCOOL: It only cost me $1 a shot now too.

Welcome to the economical way to shoot, and hunt.  I have been handloading for years, and if I did not, then I would not shoot near as much as I do.
By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

Calling an illegal alien an 'undocumented immigrant' is like calling a drug dealer an 'unlicensed pharmacist'.

Congrats on finding your load quickly.  Man, that 200 gr bullet must be screaming out of the .338. :o
May I always be the kind of person my dog thinks I am.

I use to reload for my 22-250 and have every thing for my 223 just havent done it since 223 is so cheap. After seeing ammo prices and needing to shot my 338 more I fingured I could make up about 100rds for the cost of 20.

Its pushing 2900-3000fps with around 3900ftlb of energy.  I dont have a crono but it doesnt take long to go 500yards and punch a hole in 1/2" plate :chuckle:

Heres a ballistics chart on it it shoot flat :mgun:

Range (yards)                Muzzle   50     100    200    300    400      500
Velocity (fps)                 2950   2836   2724  2509   2305   2109    1924
Energy (ft.-lb.)               3865   3571   3295  2796   2358   1976    1644
Trajectory (200 yd. zero) -1.5    0.6      1.6    0.0     -7.1   -20.8    -42.3
Come Up in MOA             -1.5   -1.1    -1.5    0.0     2.3      5.0       8.1

On my brother's and my .338.  We sight ours in 2.5 in. high at 100 yards.  Absolutely dead on out to 400 yrds.  My brother knocked a bull flat at 410 yrds 3 yrs. ago, the bullet went in at the chest, and was lodged in his butt.
