Gallatin MT area
« on: January 18, 2013, 10:24:13 PM »
Anyone spent any time in the Gallatin, Mt area?  N and NW of Yellowstone.

Thinking about Archery Elk there this coming year.  Hear there are a lot of Grizzlies in the area though.

There can be a lot of bears.  What unit are you thinking of?

Any of the offshoots of the Gallatin River.  Open for Branched Bull.

Beautiful elk country. Pre wolf days it was awesome. The W Fork Gallatan in particular has taken a real beating by the wolves.

The Taylor Fork, Sage Cree, Carrot Basin, Beaver Creek are all Grizzly Bear Central.  If you're not comfortable around them I'd find somewhere else to hunt.

There can be lots of crowds.  Get in shape.  There are elk in there.

I was thinking Taylor Fork/Buck Creek area.  I can "say" I'm comfortable around Grizzlies, but when I'm 5 miles in solo...I'm not.

Is it possible to get away from the people?  How far? 5 miles, 10 miles???

Used to hunt the area quite a bit during the archery season.  Lots of bears for sure but the wolves really took a toll on the elk and even the moose there.

as said theres a decent number of bears here and the gallatin valley is a popular place to go around here.  everyone ive talked to here about the wolf issue all same the same thing--- pre-wolves awesome post wolves herd numbers down and harder hunting.

it is possible to get away from people but just like washington youre going to have to burn some boot leather to get there.  this year everyone i talked to that actually had time to elk hunt all repeated the same thing, wolf tracks everywhere elk were hard to find and were very skittish when found, thats not to say there arent killable elk around here but everyone said it was a tough year to kill one

There was wolves there 10 years ago. We spent a week fishing/exploring/hiking/riding and saw wolves right from the road south of big sky.

Ya this, lots of wolves. There are some serious wolf huggers in Bozeman and those packs are VERY healthy.

They get hunted just the same as the others :dunno:

No they don't.....one of the biggest ranches in Montana is in this area and they have a pro-wolf policy.
Ever seen a pack of 30? I have.

 :dunno:

I'm telling you what I know. I have hunted it for several years and know the area well, 2012 was my last.

There is an ASS LOAD of wolves, during season the elk will all be low on the ranches that shoot at the wolves, there will be next to nothing on the public land.
I have seen a lot of griz sign up high but have never seen one.
