A .270 Winchester in Weatherby Vanguard might be the ticket.  Also, you can take advantage by applying for special disabled hunter permits.  And there are some areas that the WDFW will let disabled hunters have a key to the gate where they can drive into the area.
May I always be the kind of person my dog thinks I am.

30-06 is a good all around gun that doesn't have much kick, but so is the .270.

260rem or 7/08 would do you just right. They are both great calibers with light recoil. I think the new Ruger Hawkeye is available in 257 roberts which is another fine round to consider, All of these are short actions, and pretty light to boot. Hope this helps.

Yup, however if you don't reload I wouldn't buy a 260 or 257. I'd take a hard look at the 7mm-08 or the 270.

Superman,

Since you have decent upper body strength, and you'll be rolling around with a shooting bench, and or a porter/helper (which you're legally entitled to), I would look for a rifle that's fairly hefty, which, regardless of caliber, will help lower felt recoil.

A 6 pound 30-06 will knock the crap out of me, but a 9 pound one doesn't.
And a 12 pounder doesn't hardly flinch off the shot, but I wouldn't want to walk very far with it. ;)

The two most important considerations I'd make if I were choosing a rifle for you, are;
Caliber, and the availability of ammunition.
And stock configuration.

If you can't readily find ammo, especially in a pinch, your rifle is easily relegated as worthless.
Try finding some .256 Newton cartridges at Ace hardware... and my 7.62x54 has been left in camp empty, while I borrowed a rifle, more than once.

Felt recoil, at the shoulder, can be lowered as much as 75% by using a pistol grip (or thumbhole) stock.
Likewise semi-automatic firearms will use up some of the forces, in cycling the action.

An AR, topped in .308, could be a great choice.

love my .25-06 and with the right bullet and placement I wouldnt hesitate to suggest it for elk at close ranges, but as many have said a .270, .243, .30-06, 7mm-08, or even a .280 rem wouldnt be bad

7mm-o8 is a good choice. All my kids shoot it (GIRLS) age 9. Kicks less then a 270 and you can shoot bear and elk with it too.

superman33, you have opened up a very large ongoing conversation. one thing you'll find about hunting is it is one of the most opinion gathering things there is.  everyone has their 2 cents and anyone willing to sit and listen will get it. lol. I've got about $42 in  :twocents: from everyone and i love it. you've come to the right place for information and welcome to the site.

now for my  :twocents: lol
the small end of the deer killing spectrum is the .243 and the .30-30, both of witch have killed a large amount of deer and have a very little kick.  the 243 has the same brass size as the 7mm-08 and the .308.  they all have a very mild kick and are very good for deer.  those are all considered short action cartridges.

if you want to step it up a little in the power department then you get up into the long action cartridges. the .270 and the 30.06 have the same size brass but the 30.06 has a slightly larger diameter bullet.

many of these will kill anything in north america and they all are very easy to find ammo for.

a good starting rifle with most of these calibers as far as best quality for the money would probably be the savage/stevens model 200. its under $300 and you can order it at walmart.

once again welcome to the site and good luck

All the caliber mentioned above are good choices.  I think a 7mm-08 can do the job with a little less recoil, a 243 can do the job as well; I do not recommend it for bigger game though if you decide to go that route, its been done, but slightly under powered for bigger game than deer in my opinion.

For a rifle itself:  a Remington 700 (older one) is a good choice.  A Savage 110 is also a good choice, here's why.  If you decide to add calibers all you have to do is purchase a spare barrel, a wrench, go / no go gauges for less than half the cost of a complete rifle.

I have been seeing sales at Joe's, Big five, Cabela's for a Savage 110 scoped for $399.

Good luck and let us know what you decided to go with.
Progressives are coming for your guns.
What are you going to do?

Well me, I do not have any guns, gave away or sold them 15 years ago.
