I would say some kind of Hawk but not sure.

how big was it? looks like a kestrel aka sparrow hawk. approx 10"

Well, we just found out what the bird is! :) It's a Peregrine Falcon. :)  A member of another forum I posted in gave me this link:  http://animals.nationalgeographic.com/animals/birds/peregrine-falcon/

We were out on Samish Island near Edison, WA. :) We spend a lot of time out there viewing and photographing Eagles and other birds. :)
It's only a 15 minute drive from our house. :) It saves us time and gas to got there instead of up to the Rockport, Marblemount area on the Skagit. :)  Yesterday we counted 350 Eagles. :) Plus all of the Hawks, Owls, Herons and other birds. :) Not a bad day out. :)
