Problem bear....Now its personal
« on: September 19, 2008, 10:39:32 PM »
My buddies father called me and said that he was having trouble with a bear.  I told him I have no problem taking him down, or so I thought.  The property is a total of 20 acres, most of it blackberries.  I cannot use a high powered rifle because of the neighbors nor can I use my bow because of lack of shooting lanes.  So I am running my 12 gauge shooting slugs.  I had an entire week of vacation so I hunted him everyday last week.  On Thursday I seen him at 30 yards.  Pulled up on him and he tucked away into the brush.  He had no clue I was there, he just got lucky.  I couldnt get close to were he was at for 5 hours due to berry bushes and the amount of noise that I would make getting to him.  He didnt move until later that evening, in the dark of course.  So I continued to hunt him with not sign one of him around, until Sunday.  Wind in my face, 20 yards away from him, waiting for him to pop out into the open when the wind shifted to my back.  BUSTED.  Had to go back to work this week and have not been able to hunt.  But, I had 5 days to stew over the missed oppurtunity.  Now its personal.  I am bound and determined to put a pic of him on this site and his meat in my freezer.  Game On.

Keep at it and you'll connect.

What slugs are you using?
I'd recommend a good, hard Brenneke or Dixie Slugs...most everything else is SOFT and doesn't hold up well against thicker skin, thick layers of fat, and definitely not bone. I've seen 12ga slugs split it two from a blacktails rib, and barely made it deep enough to drop the deer.

Anyhoo, best of luck and keep us posted!
I left it better than I found it...did you?
I hunt animals because veggies are too easy to stalk.

Im using remington sluggers.  I hope that they are enough to knock him down.  Hunted him today and no luck.  Always tomorrow.

Thanks.  He has yet to show back up.  I think he will show towards the end of the week.  It seems that he is on a cycle on when he comes around.
