tanning in an apartment?
«
on:

so i was thinking of taking a shot at a coyote this year, but if i got the opportunity i would want to justify it by tanning its hide. the problem is i live in apartment and cant really afford to take it to a tannery and pay for it. im just curious if it would be feasible to tan a hide on my deck. i would probbaly use a couple of plastic tubs for the soaking process etc. i donno if this would be a foolhardy adventure and id just end up with a mess ad pissed off neighbors, or if it would be possible. anyways just thought i would toss this out there and see what you think. thanks

I've read about tanning in the bath tub. Search the net.

It's not that expensive. I had these guys do a hair on deer hide for me a year ago. Turned out great. Cost was $85 to do it. Give them a call and see what a yote would cost. It would be way easier than doing it yourself in an apartment.

thanks goldeneye, ill give em a call tomorrow and see what they have to say. we've got a baby on the way so im trying to spend as little as possible now so ill hopefully be able to buy a deer tag for 2013. $85 dosent sound bad for a deer though, i paid $120 for my hide from this year .

I just dropped my elk hide off there this morning, they seem really friendly and helpful. I was quoted $5 per square foot for hair off tanning, I want take a shot at doing some leather work with it.

that sounds like a pretty reasonable price. i just made a few sheaths for a couple of knives a few months ago, and leather working is pretty fun, just make the investment and get good tools. most of my projects turned out pretty amateur.

I tanned a beaver at college........ok, let me figure out how to say this without inspiring all of the gutter comments.
I manipulated a beaver while living in an apartment.....(Nope, thats not it)
I used a home tanning alum method to preserve a beaver hide while living at an apartment at college in Ellensburg. I had a small Balcony, which helped. It might have also helped that at the time, Ellesburg stunk all of the time anyway.
