what pound line do you use braided or mono

4 pound for trout and panfish, 8-10 pound for bass, 12 for pinks, silvers, and steelhead, and 12-15 for chums, 15-20 for kings. Catfish also go 4 -10 pound.
Prefer to go as light as possible for the conditions but that's an average for me. When trolling pop gear for trout and Kokanee I run 12 main and 4 pound leaders.Also I always use mono now a days. Especially on the crowded rivers. Braid makes a mess for everyone out there. Especially since every time I see someone on the river with braid they never seem to cast in order with the crowd. After spending that much time tangled in others line you would think they would cast in order. Braid has a good purpose. I just don't like it on crowded rivers.

I used to swear by power pro, until I got tired of replacing it every couple years. Try some Jerry brown spectra, you'll never go back. I also think P line is junk. Izorline is pretty tough to beat as far as mono. As far as braid or spectra popping off the downrigger, that's why I bumped up to 50lb, if Im fishing really deap like 300 plus sometimes I run a mono topshot to give the release clip a little more to hold onto.

Why is p-line junk? That stuff is tough as nails. CXx for the casters and cx for the spinning reels. It's out performed McCoy izorline and trilene for me.

   Most people dont bother to read the box and use the right line for their reels.  Then blame the line when it shoots off the reel and tangles up.

I have always been a Trilene kinda of guy ...its kinda like broadheads , once I find what works best for me I never change  For Salmon and steelhead I like Trilene ( BIG GAME ) 15 OR 20 # TEST ....Toughest momo you can buy

I use 4lb Berkley Trilene XT on my ultra light and light spinning rods for jigging pan fish, walleye, and trout. My trolling/ baitcaster rigs are spooled with 10lb Trilene XT. My sturgeon/ Ocean bottom fishing pole has 40lb Trilene big game mono on it.

Halibut rods have 50lb Jerry Brown braid.

Salmon downrigger rods have 25lb Berkley Big Game. Making the switch to P-Line Cxx when the spool of BG is gone.

Salmon mooching rods have 12lb Big Game

Steelhead float rods have 30lb Fireline

Trout rods have whatever 4lb mono is on sale.

this summer i was fishing the snake when i was over on the east side and i caught a 30 pound catfish on 15 pound p-line i dont see why people think its bad line. what line i dont like is spider wire or what ever its called i had problems with there braided line fraying and the mono i was using as leaders kep breaking on sea bass i went to england marine in westport bought the cheapest 15 pound test and it worked way better then that spider crap.

I've converted many people over to P-line.  Most of them used Izor, before they saw the light.  Izor is strong, but it ends there.   The Memory sucks, it stretches like bubble gum and good luck spooling up at the river and keeping it on the reel.  Just my opinion and observation though.... at least you get a free sticker.

I go as light as I can go without breaking off a fish. 2 lb.floracarbon for trout to 65 lb braided for monster fish

Just my opinion on the p line. I've tried it all, I get free spools so have no reason to be biased. I especially hate their fluorocarbon, it's twice the diameter of seagar and a pain to tie knots with, that's what initially turned me away from P line.

i  noticed that before with the p-line it does do weird things when i tie certian knots. i thought it was because i was in a hurry when the bite was on i just tied a few knots and it is weird.

Everybody has stuff they don't like. Me,I don't like Maxima. I think its overpriced and overrated.

I fully agree.  Theyre 100% fluorocarbon sucks, The fancy halo stuff isnt much better and for $25 per 200yd spool, they can keep it.

Here is something you can do to your brade to keep it floating so it is easy to mend.

Go to a fly shop and get a wax case and run your line through that.  You are good for a long time.  I am not sure what it is called.  I have the flu and I am not getting up to see what it is.

Haven't had much luck with the P line either...... I have been using the maxima crystal ivory in 12lb. I have that for the mainline and also use it for my leaders. For me I have had a lot of success with it. The rod I fish with is the G LOOMIS.... GL3. It's 10'6" and has the line weight of 6-12lb test....... I have landed some pretty big fish with hat combo..... The other rod that I mainly use is the lamiglas certified pro, 10'6" , with the line weight of 10-20..... That's my king rod. Both get the maxima line..... The Lami.. I use heavier line...... But I love those rods and the crystal ivory line has performed well for me!!

I've actually had great luck with maxima as well, just harder to get my hands on and izor seems to be comparable. If one  leader can hold up to a dozen tuna on live bait stops... (Without retying) It's proven itself to me. None of my experience has been on metal heads, or any rivers for that matter, so take my opinions with a grain of salt.
