I've been thinking about a new pistol Im pretty sure I want a 45...any paticular model you guys recomend?

yeah mostly conceal...something to have on backpacking trips

You have a lot of choices, what's your budget?  1911's around $400 - 650   RIA, High Standard, Springfield Armory GI, Taurus, Norinco and others.   A commander size 1911 is a bit easier to conceal, but depends on your statue

I bought a High Standard a few years ago for $409 the gun shoots very accurately and gun was put together pretty good.   Go to the 1911 forum and look around

Cannot go wrong with a Kimber.  Mine is full size Government, but conceals well and is a good shooter.

I really like my para-ordnance .45 model p12. It's compact version of the 1911 and holds 12 in the double stack magazine. It's shoots well and I think is less pricey than the Kimber.

Yeah, the Kimber is not cheap, that is for sure.  I like the single stack as it is thinner and profiles less when concealed.  Double stacks would be nice when plinking, but if I need more than 8 rounds for self defense, I have bigger problems to deal with!

Yeah, I have never concealed carried my para yet. That's a good point with the thinner grip with the singel stack. Since I just finally renewed my permit I think I'll have to find myself a single stack version.  Maybe splurge and get a Kimber.  My brother has a Colt defender I like a lot too. Too many guns and too little time and way too little $$$.

My opinion of them is that they have all these fancy bells and whistles, and are designed to the lowest common denominator...

I like my 90 year old 1911 enough that I bought a new one to match.

I had a magnum research baby eagle in 45 and was one of the nicest shooting pistols I have had and is one of the lower priced one too. My dad has had colt,kimbers, and a few others and the kimbers seem to be the ones he keeps. I carry a kimber ultra carry (when my mom's not using it) and its a very nice piece, its very easy to conceal and shots pretty good. I like the Springfield xd's as well they are a nice pistol. The best thing I can tell you so to go and handle a few different ones and see what you like and don't.

The springfield xd in 45 caliber would be my choice, definately like it a lot more than a glock. They are moderately priced I think 500-600 and are a great gun.

for outdoor carry, I bought a 45acp Taurus Ti revolver.
Totally weatherproof, half the weight of my Kimber 1911.
5 rds of 45.
IF you must have an autoloader, I would look at Glock or Springfield XD.
Just a smart gun to have in an outdoor environment.
IMHO, 1911's are for sports...there are better options for outdoors activities.

I carry my Beretta 92 the most. I like the origial hand made Dan Wesson 1911's before they sold out to CZ. I really want a Ruger Blackhawk in 357!

Well since any confrontation that would normally require a person to pull and utilize a handgun is in the 7 meter range, and it will happen quickly without alot of time to react, I want something comfortable, controllable, and also so I carry it regularly versus when it is convenient to do so...   I use a couple options, in the woods, nothing better than my Smith and Wesson Mountain gun with 4" barrel in of course .44 mag, if coolers temps when you can conceal properly my Kimber Ultra Carry in .45 with Crimson Trace grips, but 90% of time I will have my new little gun, that I think is probably the best all around, least problematic gun there is, a hammerless single action 2" snub nosed .38 Smith and Wesson Air Weight with Crimson Trace grips, can conceal anywhere and is quite a joy to shoot, so if I ever need it in that close up range of 7 meters or less, it will be available for use....  And on target to boot....  Recommend shooting all different guns at the local range and seeing what fits you.  Yea, I was all about Horse Power till I started actually shooting from the concealed holster at the ranges versus off hand target style.  I used to shoot competively for Police matches and shooting from the concealed holster is a different animal all together.  Makes a huge difference when your comfortable and accurate plus able to carry all the time...  Don't get me wrong, I still like the big guns but I am more concerned with speed and accuracy on target than any thing else, WHEN I NEED IT...........  I would rather have five rounds on target than one or maybe two from a larger caliber...  Of course hitting someone in the arm with a .45 brings them down also...  HMMMMM!  "Remember, a loud verbal Stop, Get Away, Stop Get Away, Bang Bang, Stop Get Away, Bang Bang..!!!" will always be the last thing a witness will remember in court!  It is always something to consider when carring concealed, never ever show it till you need it, then don't hesitate when you need to...

Glocks Rock!!!  I want anyone to put any of the pistols listed under their PU seat for four months starting now.  Pull them out and the Glock will not have a visible spot of rust.  Now the negatives of the Glock....NO FRIGGEN SAFETY.  Take that aside with Trijicon sights no other gun is as durable or as simple to use.  Oh...accuracy is equal to just about anything other then a tight custom, and how reliable are those in dirty real world life.

Glocks are awesome guns, and the customer service is 2nd to none.  As far as safeties are concerned, the Glock has been proven to be the safest auto pistol out there.... and the .45 compact is an excellent carry piece.

That being said, I like steel guns, love my 1911.  However, you are looking for a trail gun, find you a snub nosed 44 mag or 45 long colt in double action.  You never have to worry about feed jams, magazine jams, etc.....  could be the difference, in a split second trail encounter with one of the four legged predators.

You can't go wrong with a Glock they are accurate, at least mine is, and they are dependable.  I wish though that they were American made.

I just picked up a FN 45.  So far, very nice gun, shoots very well and holds 14+1.  "as long as there is lead in the air, you've got a prayer"

We are issued Glocks and they are utterly reliable. Can't customize them a whole lot as far as grips and such. Not going to be as accurate as a high end 1911 but those looser tolerances also keep it functioning in situations where a $1500 1911 would be failing to function. They are good for what they were designed for, a combat weapon.

i dont own a 45, but my steyr M40-A1...40 cal....  would do the same as your glock.....And i like the steyr alot better, hands down......

Glocks are fine guns that take a beating and keep on. I have not noted exceptional accuracy in the normal glocks tho they do build a target model.
I carried a glock 21 as a issue gun for a few years, qualified with one several times.  that said:

I carry a Kimber Pro Carry II stainless, 45acp. night sites. on 21 foot silloettes (spelling) I can draw and put 8 in the 10 ring in under 5 seconds consistantly, an occasional 3.5, I never could do that with the Glock 21, of the Glocks I like the model 19 best for comfort.
