What kind of groups are you getting?

Tony, I bought some cheap factory ammo to break it in.  I shot one three shot group at the end of my range session and it was 1/2 inch.   I am expecting 3/10ths with handloads, but I am more concerned with my groups at 500+.  This barrel cleans like a dream - I am expecting good things!

Those 15x56 SLCnew's are certainly the way to go for "Big Eyes".

I never gave much thought to long range hunting.... but here lately I've been toying around with a .300SAUM with VX-III 3.5-10x40 with M1 turrets and 180gr. Accubonds. A friend of mine manages a Ranch outside Hondo Tx. and each year is required to cull a large number of WT doe. Shot distance aren't very far (relatively speaking)... typically under 700 yards.

How's the terminal performance of the 168gr. Berger VLD's?

Bergers are now being marketed as a hunting bullet..........  The are people (including some good personal friends) that are having great success with these bullets.  The 168's are popular in the 7mm Mags and the 210's are usually the standard for the ultra mag crowd.  I think recoil has a lot of impact on accurate shooting as well as shot recovery.  I chose less powder and recoil and went with a smaller bullet.   I think the 168 VLD (.504 B.C.) at around 3300 fps will be a managable, accurate round with exceptional terminal effect.

The Accubond is a great bullet!

700 yards is short relative to what, the average shooter should never take a shot over 200 yards, i personally wont shoot over 300 and even then it would have to be perfect conditions.

This 300 may not be my most accurate rifle, but I don't think I could have gotten a better end product anywhere else - especially for the price!  Russ Haydon has a wesite, but you won't see any mention of gunsmithing on it.  Give him a call if you want a first class rifle - he is a wealth of knowledge if you are an accuracy freak like me!

I finally got to try this rig out on the 600 yard plate this weekend.  It was pretty foggy, but there was no wind what-so-ever.  Pretty ideal shooting conditions for our area.  I set up the bench and shot a 100 yard group that was really tight.  We had chrono'ed this load that seemed to be very accurate.  I was using Nosler Custom Brass, a Federal Match LR primer, 75 grains of RL-22, and a 168 grain berger bullet.  This load was shooting exactly the same as the new Nosler Manual - 3110 fps.  After shooting a ragged hole at 100, we dialed up 41 clicks as per the NF ballistics program.  I sent three shots down to the 600 plate and heard three distinctive "whops".  We drove down to the plate and were amazed to find a 5/8 inch group dead center in the 10" x 10" plate.  As you can imagine, I stopped shooting right there!  I have no illusions that this will be standard for this rifle, but it did make me feel good that the rifle has definite potential!

WOW, for that price it better pack the animal out for you, nice rifle. I have a 7mm browning with an A-bolt, floating stock, bi-pod, 6.5-20x50 leapold, etc... I found I don't use it as much as I use my 243 with a 3-9. The gun is not comfortable to pack all day and not good for under 200 yards. It is fun out past that. I've shot a yote at 617yds with it. 

Not bashing your gun (I would love to have it) it is very purpose specific.
