best beginner goose call
« on: January 15, 2013, 08:15:56 PM »
Have tried a few calls of friends, not sure which ones, but have trouble making them not sound like a screamin kid...lol

Anyone have any suggestions on good calls to start with?

Whats your price range???
Also I would recommend learning a short reed over a flute.
The flute can make a few goosey sounds and get the job done but the short reed is capable of making all goose sounds thus upping the odds of being able to tell them what they want to hear.

I have little experience with the goose call and ordered Buck Gardner Grey Ghost. I like it so far.. making progress on my calling and its a pretty easy call. Might be worth a look.

I wouldn't be looking for a beginners goose call. From my experience buying a goose call is a investment and don't make price a option and don't settel for a call that is lightly tuned that you can get a half ass honk out of it. There are so many goose calls out there on the market that are great goose call and your fundamentals play the bigest factor in it but that you can learn.   when i buy a new goose call i look for how dose it feel in my hands and is the bell of the call to big for my hands is the mane key. Your hands are the biggest part of blowing a goose call you can have a 200 dollar goose call and 5 dollar hands and you have a 5 dollar goose call but don't get discurage you can learn hand position. It took me 2 year to get my call down blowing it 30 mins every day and I'm still learning new things today. I went with a short reed acrylic call because your not limited to the sounds and calls you can make and with a acrylic call dosen't exorb any of the sound what you put into the call is what you get out it. There harder to lean on but you would be better off in the long run.
Whack em and stack em

Ive got a big river goose call that came with an instructional cassette tape and after listening to the tape i had it double clucking, and calling really good. Takes little back pressure to operate, and its good and loud. I tried the short reed calls and they sounded terrible with me blowin them. I couldnt figure out the back pressure at the right time thing. The big river call i got was the wooden call, about 8-10 inches long or so. Even if you bought it and didnt like it youd only be out 15 bucks or so.
shut up and fish!.

Like many calls you can sound "better" with a more expensive call, however it is better to sound great on a cheep call than OK on a great call. I've blown short barrels, and i don't sound as good, so i use my big river. I think the same applies to duck calls.  :twocents:

:yeah:
I have one of these on my lanyard and use it often.  Sometimes geese need to hear something different.  I believe they have heard short reeds from Alberta and BC all the way down to here.  Sometimes a change up helps.
I have a friend who is exceptional with a short reed.  There have been times when he will work the short reed and I'll work the Big River flute at the same time, it's pure dynamite.
Spent most of my $$ on huntin, fishin & retrievin dogs, the rest I just pretty much wasted.

Funny you should mention that... If you listen to ducks/geese there is no "uniform" sound. often a bunch aof different sounds make a "group"  of geese. youalso find that in many other calls something "different" sound more authentic. gees sounds are as different as human voice, so if you know the "language" a unique sound my be the cats Arse!
