what to do with sheds?
« on: January 24, 2013, 03:58:25 PM »
What do you all do with the sheds you find? Anyone want to post pics. I have my sets hanging on a wall, a few of the big ones on the entertainment center and the rest go into a pile. Id love to figure out somethin cool to do with them.

Haven't found a shed yet but someone had a nice half antler (right around the royal so it was nice and wide) of an elk and drilled holes and made a cribbage board out of it. It was bad ass.

Through them in my pile of other sheds, give them away, or leave them in the woods.

I'm gunna make an antler alter for my wedding in June, I'll have to get pretty lucky finding sheds in the next few months so I can cover the alter. I'll have to post pics when I'm done. The other sweet project I'm workin on is a brute blacktail shed fillet knife, 17" tip to tang, 10.5" blade, Damascus steel. Just havin a little trouble finding corby rivets long enough to go thru the base of the shed.
When your hunting, you're living. Everything else is just waiting.

I take them to my cabin and throw them around the property for kids of my guests to find.  Gets them hooked on the outdoors.

I had to do something with my sheds besides pile um on the floor, got one of those how to build a lamp tapes and it gives you some tips for doing a good job, besides the best part of shed hunting is the finding part, once you have a pile then make something

Extremely good for dogs teeth. The bone marrow is very nutritious. Deer antlers are very expensive at like Reber ranch and petco etc. so if if you have a dog, cut them open and let em have at it!

There is a guy from Lewiston that buys the brown sheds.  A friend of mine just got $4200 for 300 lbs of a mix of whitetail and moose antlers.  He buys them by the pound and I think it was $9 for deer and $11 for moose.  Looks to me like AntlerKing has at least a few thousand dollars worth in that pile.

Take them back out there and lay them around then go back the next weekend and see if you can find them again.

this is going to sound really easy but its not always as easy as it sounds

go to where the deer are hanging out right now. this time of year they will start dropping their antlers, find said deer hang out spot and just start walking around looking at the ground. walk slow and look at everything if you think its an antler pick it up 9/10 times for me its a stick but shed hunting is a lot like deer hunting; patience and persistence will pay off eventually plus its a great way to get out of the house and into the woods

good luck

It's kinda like connect the dots, Start at the base and drill a hole as far as you can until it comes out of the antler.
This will be your starting point for the next hole to drill. Continue doing this till your last hole arrives where you want the wire to come out. It takes practice, following the curviture of the antler, When you have fished all the wire thru, you putty up the holes and color them to match the antler. I am far from a pro at this, but with a little practise, it works great.  Good luck :)
