Identify this for me please.
« on: August 04, 2007, 09:39:22 AM »
I have an idea but not sure if I am correct. Luna Moth larva?

Body soft, not too fast of a mover, stinger or what ever it is on top side movable with my finger, mouth parts did not grip or bite at items offered to it like a beetle would.

I've seen these critters in Yooper Land a lot but this is the first for me here. I was on my plum tree so we moved it to the wood pile.

Any help in identification will be appreciated. BTW I have some cat eared spiders living under my deck again this season. Last year they got huge eating the bugs in their webs. I'll get some pictures of them next.

Its one of the Sphinx moths larvae as far as I can tell.  Closest one I can find is the Wild Cherry Sphinx moth.  It looks very similiar.

Here is another Cherry worm for you

I have seen one of these in my lifetime and it was in Twisp.  Notably seen in Canada(you're close enough) and northern climates like Wisconsin.  Thats all I know.

Nice pictures in that link.  I have alot of the Hummingbird Sphinx moths witch are cool, and quite a few of the Cerisy Sphinx, or one eye ones.  Neat looking critters.  Their worms are sure hell on my tomatoe plants though.  I plant extras just for them, or so they think.
