Treestand blacktail

Do any of you guys use a treestand for blacktail? If you do have you had any success.

nice . I see a lot of deer when i spot and stalk or still hunt but it is hard to close the deal on them. Glad to heard good things about treestand hunting them. Most of the time people tell me its Dumb Whitetail tactics

tried a ground blind in a area i seen a big forkenhorn and 2 spikes during late archery . sat for hours i never seen 1 deer. i got really bored and i hate it but hunting from tree stands or ground blinds are very productive.

I use a tree stand in sept, and have had deer come within range, but nothing I wanted to shoot. During Modern I don't use it that much now that my son is hunting with me. I have to learn to be more patient with it.

It works, especially with some judicious use of apples.  You don't need to put out a lot.

I shoot almost all of my blacktail bucks from stands. I have shot more out of treestands than groundstands, but it depends on the situation.

The apples are falling in September.  If you have no trees to set up near, just start tossing out three or four apples a couple times a day, if you can,  they will not know there is not a tree there and will continue to come by and check to see if any hew ones have fallen.  They need to be rewarded occasionally.  I try not to put them out just before dark as I like to try to condition them to looking for the apples during daylight.  One idea I had last year,m but did not try, was to hang a bag of apples out of reach so that there would be continuous scent in the area just like an apple tree would leave.

Yes they work, but scounting is VERY important. Trail cams and Boyd iversons Blacktail trophy tactics are a must! I have rifle hunted from them on the edge of an over grown clear cut with 10ft regrowth in them. you can see EVERYTHING!

Tree stands work,  They are also a nice place to get caught up on ones reading.

When I 1st started hunting blacktail back in the 80s I spent hours in tree stands and sitting on trails thinking I could kill them like a whitetail ...WRONG ! Not saying you can not get them from a tree stand but for me its all been spot and stalk hunting and what really has worked for me in the last 10 yrs has been me being aggressive ... I do not like eating tags    When things seem to get tough I like getting in the woods and finding alot of sign and start calling ... I like a grunt tube and the Primos can ...Not saying you will always call a buck in but if you stay persistant and cover alot of ground eventually something will happen ...this year was no different ...hunted hard in late bow season and seen some nice bucks and I take the blame for my son not bagging a good one  One morning I woke up and told myself I will make something happen today and after hitting a few spots I finally found the right one ...I walked up a grade that had some fresh horning on it . I found an old cedar stump and hunkered in ...I start grunting and then took out my old Primos can and rolled it over once and I look to my left and I see a deers butt go behind a cedar not 7 steps from me ... He steps out and WHACK ...END OF STORY ! When it happens it happens quick .... To me it is all what you put into it ! never give up and hunt hard

I personally liketree stands first and last light with sport and stalk inbetween.

The biggest problem with stand hunting (for some) is getting good penetration and blood trails from Wasp broadheads. I've heard they have problems with shots taken at to much of an angle.

The bull i killed in my avatar had 10 inches of arrow riding in between his hide and ribs. Too much of a quartering shot from what it looked like. Broadhead was a Wasp.
 As far as tree stands for blackies, I'm gonna give it a whirl next year. Where I kill my black tails it would work like a charm.

The only way that I have found to be successful hunting out of a treestand for BT's is if you are using bait.

Id say yes on stands.  I tried it last year one morning and saw 3 does come thru.  Its all about where you put it.  I like to be on feet for blackies.

I personall yhaven't hunted them out of tree stands - i don't have the patience.

However, a buddy with a scoped 44 mag pistol wandered out behind the house and saw somebody else's tree stand.   He sat in it for 5 minutes before killing an absolute pig of a 4X4 .     Way better blacktail than I've ever gotten.

Thank -you ...I should of mentioned I did not use bait when I was sitting in my tree stand for weeks waiting for a blacktail to walk by  I personally do not bait deer ...just not my thing but I am not saying you can not ...if it floats your boat go for it ....That Wasp makes such a little hole in an animal but leaves a river of a blood trail ...Just saying

I havegotten stabbed in the side of the knee with a wasp by a friendandcan tell you this.........THEY ARE SHARP. We saw a bear so we nocked up,bothtook a step and then my leg felt very warm. by the time i realized i had my pant leg up i had blood in my shoe. Had to ty a sock around it so i would bleed out, well maybe not that serious as to bleed out

tree stands are the way to go i've killed my biggest bt's from them,i think the main reason for me is you can hunt in alot thicker areas where theres no way you could spot and stalk or still hunt i like it when the hunters on here say its to thick in the units i hunt or the deer are nocternal the tree stand gives u the operutinty to hunt in the thick stuff where the deer move all day or earlier they dont just lay down all day and only move at night

you have a good point there    My biggest problem is I always been a stalker kinda hunter ...I can remember my Dad chewing my butt out as a kid when he would put me somewhere and tell me to not move  and when he returned I was gone .. I was 11 yrs old when he told me to sit by this tree and stay here and made a comment to me saying , you need to sit still you will not kill these whitetail sneaking around the woods  WRONG !! After he left me I sat still for about a 1/2 hour then I was in pursuit on a fresh deer trail    I ease down it stopping alot and then I heard a twig snap . My heart is beating out my chest when I see horns heading my way ...I had the Old Bear Whitetail bow ...You know ..those long bows they made in the 80s    He steps out at about 35 yrds and whack I smoked him.. nice 7 pt ..east coast count ... I was so excited I ran back to my dad and tell him I got one ...When we get to where I was sitting he says where was it ...I said not here  he shacks his head ...then we head down the trail ...when we got there we could not find any blood and now my dad is saying I missed !!! I said no way I missed ...He walks around a minute and leaned up against a tree to have a smoke ...He is asking me these questions....Why I moved - what did you shoot at and on and on ...He then looks down at his feet and is standing in blood  ten minutes later ...1st whitetail down !! I still stick to the same method

ya i've killed alot of bucks both ways it seemed like i didn't get my first trophy till i started using a tree stand,  that being said i think it takes more scouting to find the right spot to put your tree stand if you dont want to be bored out of your mind, anyone who's hunted blacktail much has ran into the spot where theres huge rubs with all thick area around it and say thats why they get as big as they do cuz they live in that crap thats where my tree stand goes see right in that six foot tall huck and salal

I am with ya on that man ... they find their little hole to hind in and do their business in the peek of the rut ...then as it winds down they get stupid and pop out into the open a little more often ! I may be putting up a stand this year ...I have been trying to kill this one buck for years and he does not come out in daylight hours ...but I know where he lives and it is thicker than ....... and I maybe hanging over his head this season

   Very subjective question. It will depend on your setup which will be most productive.

Almost 20 deer now and not one has been from a treestand.   Shot 4 elk from a stand

I find that tree stands are best in the evening, but for onlyone reason. USUALLY i manage to scare deer elmer-fudding throught the woods in the dark. Boyd Iversone leans tword tree stand in the evinening. 

I have one spot that i had TONS of pics and i scared deer going into the stand. I took my fathers tractor with a brush hog and mowed my path to the stand so i could be quiet... Well the deer loved to bed on my new path. They were always there in the morning but i could't get close to them to hunt them in the morning. I rarely saw them in the evening.
