How long did you hunt before your first kill?
« on: January 30, 2013, 06:23:15 PM »
Just curious as to how long some of you had to hunt before you actually got your first kill of the species you were targeting? What age?
Next year will probably be my first official year getting some field time in so I kinda want to know what Im up against so I dont get discouraged.

Im a bowhunter, Cant touch a gun.

Might be a dumb question but what is considered upland game?

Hunted with my dad from about age 5 to 12 or 13 without getting to have a gun. First kill was 13 or 14 whitetail doe second morning out.

It's all about effort and time in the woods. Pops always says you're not going to get'm sittin on the couch! And he's right.

Remind yourself how lucky you are just to be out  in the outdoors and you will never be discouraged.

the odds are pretty slim budy..not being rude, just realistic..youve mention in other posts your doing this all on your own so that puts ya pretty far behind compaired to people that have generations of family hunting history being passed down to them

best thing you can do is find some one that will let you tag along...even if ya dont pack a weapon and only get to use you binos and pack board it would be worth it 1000%..esp in regards to what ya do when ya get one down

but as you know hard work lets people defy odds all the time

as for your question i think it was my second year hunting with a bow that i shot my first deer..sorry forgot your using bow riggin....

I was eight and had my first duck down after about 10 minutes.  I had my first deer down the first day out.  Elk took me 3 or 4 years.

About three hours to get my first buck on public land at 16 years old. It was 100% dumb luck because I had no idea what I was doing. After I got it down it was an absolute circus. Elk took me five years to get my first one.

Two or three years for my first pheasant (my dad kept shooting them out from under me   :yike: ).

Duck the second time out at 12.

About two hours for first deer at age 12.

First deer (WT) with the bow was three years, not for lack of throwing arrows at them though.   ;)

Upland game would be quail, chucker and birds of that sort

This is a bowhunting thread, correct? Some of these answers are kind of impressive.

Three years for me on an archery 5 point elk, 19 years old. Passed many smaller bulls in search for a good one.

As far as deer, with a bow, never. About 6 or 7 seasons in and have taken one shot, clean miss. Once again, passed some smaller bucks looking for a bigger buck. I may be trying all my life, who knows.

If we are talking hunting in general, I got my first elk at age 16 with a rifle, rag horn, 2 days into my hunting career.

Deer was season two, 17 years old.
