Theres nothing about any Purina products that I like. I personally think they are garbage.
If theyre advertised on tv = garbage.
If you really care about your animals "Not targeting you personally",
Look for specialty foods.
I highly highly recommend "Fromm" brand. They have different variations for meat and or veggy dominant. Depending on your breed of dog, or cat.

What are you basing that on? Ingredients or results?

Again, I've had good results with it. I even know of a field trailer or two who run their dogs for more miles hooked up to a quad and in the field than most average dog owners will and they also feed PPP to their crews.

I also know of a number of people who feed anything but PPP to their dogs and also get good results. To that I say great, whatever works.
Both, not all dogs are going to get good results. If a dogs in great health he can eat virtually anything. His health will deteriorate over time, whether you notice it or not.
Just like man, even though he looks in shape, doesnt mean he is.

And alot of people feed theyre dogs that stuff, because they just dont know of anything better. They think "Its the best, or It works just fine." But are usually open to atleast try new products that are possibly better for them. Im just trying to share what I do know. My girl and her family grew up training show dogs. We have an amazing shebu inu that I love to death. I couldnt imagine feeding him anything but the best. No stabs at what anyone feeds theyre animals. Just trying to share :)

Our baby can only eat Dick Van Pattens Natural Balance Limited Ingredient Diet Potato and Duck Dried Dog Food.

The two of them tell me what to get, and I buy it :dunno:

Hey just a friendly idea.
Fromm also carries a whitefish and potato which has alittle less ingredients in it for more sensitive dogs, Ive never tried it personally but if your having a hard time finding food that fits them maybe give it a try?

Is anyone outside of the show dog world using Fromm dog food?

The nutritional requirements of a working dog are rather different...

fromm is good stuff, I would use it if it weren't so expensive ( four big dogs) Smossy sounds like a sales rep, maybe he can hook us up. :chuckle:

as for the nutritional requirements of working and show dogs...I  don't see too many flabby sporting group contestants in the show ring.  Show dogs get worked to build up their muscle tone for the judges. they might not have hunt from dawn til dusk but they are no couch potatoes either.

I don't think there is one perfect dog food out there, every dog is going to react differently to any given formula. I have four dogs and at one time I was feeding Three different brands and formulas in accordance to what I thought they needed. I am down to one now ( natures domain or TOTW) and everyone's improving. my last hold out was my youngest setter who was on ppp for most of his life. he wouldn't gain weight ( looked too thin even for a shag) and his coat looked like chit ( in the right light you could see his pink skin) after a month and a half of natures domain he gained a couple healthy pounds and his coat fluffed up like crazy. Im not saying natures domain did this, I think any dog food a with a nutritional value better than PPP would have achieved this result.
PPP's second ingredient is corn gluten meal, which is something most higher quality brands are staying away from,  I think I am going to follow their lead.

if I had the time, energy, and money I would feed the BARF or Raw diet again, my dogs had never looked better or had more energy.

Natures Domain from costco! Good food, reasonable price. My golden missed a lot of this year from allergic reactions that had him chewing his feet raw. Switched to Natures domain and doing great.
Not saying this was the problem at all, But It could be an issue with some peoples animals.
It seems not very many people are aware of flea hypersensitivity.
Just a few flea bites will cause the same effect (that you explained), in which your average pet can take a whole infestation and barely go noticed. Diet does play a role in helping but does not solve the problem. Cheers to everyone and caring to actually look into better feeding/tending theyre animals. Remember your animals are a part of the family, You wouldnt want to be fed garbage, Neither do they, They just cant tell you otherwise.

Well, interesting you say that, because they had fleas at the same time and he had never reacted to food before. How can I find out what was causing it for sure? Fleas are under control now.

Haha, no Im actually somewhat new to it in the last 6 months. I love it, Love its results. I see attitude/weight/energy totally change. Cant get our stryder to sit still, Hes like a small child and hes almost 10 years old  :chuckle:
I think the energy boost would go hand in hand with the most active hunting dogs.
And yeah its expensive for sure, $50-60 for a 30lb bag.
I imagine how it would be rough for 4 dogs, Id probably find something else also.
But you DO get what you pay for, as they say with everything :) Cheers everyone.

Well its kind of hit and miss, if you find your dogs scratching or chewing on specific locations, on a reguler basis, Id start to check there, then if theres actually scabbing, but your failing to find a REAL heavy flea infestation it could be hypersensitivity, It just means they react MORE then your average animal. Just like Im somewhat alergic to cats, but I own 2 lol. BUT when one of them scratches me or something, I swell up like I just got attacked by bees. Your vet would best be able to tell you, Im pretty sure they have small tests for it just like a person would have alergy tests done. Never done it first hand, We just troubleshoot our own problems untill we get to the source. Food can play an issue in it also.

This should give you alittle better explination as Im no professional, vet, or a scientist haha.

Well...that depends. I've got some friends who show Pointers and their dogs do well in the show ring (not bad in the field too incidently). The most exercise those dogs get is whatever they burn wandering their 3 acres every day. They're lean, but comparing them to the dogs running at Ames this week is like night and day.

Compared to past years my dogs have had it easy this year, but I've demanded a lot out of my dogs at times and it showed in their calorie burn. I know of other guys who hunt their dogs 30-60 days in a hunting season, sometimes for days at a time. Not just any fuel is going to keep their motors running. Some of those dogs get run in fun trials or NSTRA or AF trials in the off season too.

Guys really running the heck out of their dogs should really take a look at Dr. Tim's. While I'm not wild about the multi meat protien in it (food allergy risks there), I've heard some good things about it. My point is guys need to look at what they're doing with their dogs and choose appropriate feeds relative to that.

I don't think there is one perfect dog food out there, every dog is going to react differently to any given formula. Funny thing though, the brand that a lot of specialty brands compare themselves to in the 30/20 category is PPP.

But like I said, if it works for your budget and your dog, feed it. My wife and I need to head to Costco this week anyhow, maybe I'll pick some Nature's Domain and give it a try.   :)

I'm starting to see this pop up more and more among some field trailers and mushers are feeding it too.

http://drtims.com/

I believe you can get this shipped to you through a couple of different services.

Something to remember about higher dollar foods like this one. You can feed less and get better results which effectively blunts the cost.
