xd or 1911?

I do not care for the xd but am a big fan of the xdm. The new xds is supposed to be pretty sweet as well.

I have owned more then a few 1911 and they always go down the road. Just not my style of handgun. As I like to tease some people I call them a brick

The new XDs is a nice gun, very good shooter, recoil is surprisingly not bad at all for such a small frame in .45. Have put  300 rounds down the tube with no issues.  How ever finding one will be an issue. Their is a new 9mm coming out in the same frame around June.

While I am very fond of the 1911 and carry one quite a bit. If I had to choose between one of my 1911's and my Springfield XDM 5.25. I would pick up the 5.25 pretty much everytime. The XDM's have run like a Glock for me. I have never had a single issue with one. The big plus over the 1911 is the double stack magazine capacity. But it is heavy and a larger framed handgun for concealed carry. It doesn't just disappear, you definitely feel it there but if ever needed with its high capacity magazine and a spare, when it came out you could definitely "Chop wood".

XD for me, capacity and feel in my hand is the reasons why I own this pistol! How you shoot a gun should be the deciding factor if you are going to carry it. So I say get your hands on both and shoot them...IMHO anyway.

I have been a die hard 1911 full size fan for 10 years. I have also had a compact 3" 1911 for carry. I just bought the XDS .45 and have to say it blows my compact 1911 away so far. I love it. I is now my full time carry gun. I can't speak for any other XD's though a few I have held are very comfy. I see another in my future.

I still love the full size 1911.

the XD sub-compact.. what most of us hear when you say XD Sub.. is a double stack 9(10rd), or .40(9rd). the XDS is a completely different (and new) slender single stack (5rd) .45 only carry size gun.
 As to your original question about the XD.. unlike a glock-where the striker is partially cocked and there is always "mush" in the trigger because of the remaining cocking action, the XD is fully cocked, and so has a pretty crisp single action trigger with a bit of take up. once broken in there's almost no resistance during the take-up. For your comparison- the XD is lighter to carry, as it is a polymer frame. The XD will run about 30 oz unloaded, a 1911 will be about 39 oz (a shorter commander length 4" may go as light as 35, and an aluminum frame in a 4" may be almost as light as the XD, but not many of those are made..). The XD is double stack- so 13rd mag in the full size .45, (my 9mm is 16rd mag) and the 'compact' xd .45 is still a 10rd mag (still not as small as an xd sub or XDS, but in between like a glock 19/23). The 1911 is pretty much always going to be a 7 or 8 shot mag. The XD has a glock type lever safety built into the trigger, and a grip safety like the 1911, but usually doesnt have a manual safety (they make a version of the .45 XD with a manual safety). The 1911 will almost always have a better trigger, with less take-up and movement. The 1911 has a flatter/ thinner profile.. and holds less rounds. The 1911 will generally be more accurate.. that said, most XD's will shoot a 3" group at 25yds, and the subcompact versions about 4.5". Will all 1911's shoot better than 3"? No, but a 1911 can be accurized, have a match barrel and bushing fitted, etc. If you dont like the way your XD groups-there's not much that can be done to it.
   Reliability.. Nearly everyone makes a 1911, and they are not all built to the same quality standard, dont all use the same quality parts. The 4 and 5" barreled 1911's from decent brands are generally reliable. (the last Phillipine made 1911 I had broke an extractor and ejector in the first 6 months) the really short 3" 1911's are generally not as reliable. I have yet to see an XD that didn't run reliably. I've seen a number of extreme sand/dust/dirt, etc tests done on the 1911 and the xd.. (and the videos are out there) enough to say if you were going to put me in a bad situation, and were going to bury my gun in the sand/dust/mud/ etc first.. then I'll take the XD.. If I have to carry it all day-I'll probably take the XD, because i've carried the all-steel 1911 all day and its a bit like carrying the GP100- at the end of the day, you notice it. if we're going to shoot a bullseye match- where I have to hit a precise target at 25 and 50yds.. I'll take the 1911.. everyone has their opinions, and there are those who will accuse me of heresy for questioning the 1911's reliability.. etc but thats my 2cents..

For a carry gun, Its hard to beat a Sig 238 for me. Compact 1911 frame, night sights, accurate and dependable. It feels very much as if I have a Minitor pager on my belt.  I give the edge to the 1911 family over the XD. When I shot an XD, it had no "wow" factor for me, but they are a fine pistol.

What are you going to do with it?
Unless I was LEO, I would take the 1911, in a full-size steel frame.
1911 will cost more.
Much better for sporting activities, much nicer to use.

My first carry gun was an XD sub-compact 40. I really liked that gun. Fit the hand well, shot well, never had a feeding problem, and carried pretty well. After I bought my first 1911, the XD was gone. Not that it was a bad gun, I just fell in love with the feel of an all steel gun.

If you're willing to spend the extra cash, any of the mid priced ($750+) 1911s are better guns IMO. Get one with a bobtail mainspring housing and they just disappear under a shirt. My absolute favorite carry gun was a Dan Wesson CCBT. I had to switch to a full size instead of the Commander though after hurting my wrists. I need the extra weight to make the gun comfortable to shoot.

I don't know what XDs go for, but I bought my Springfield Mil-Spec 1911 (used) for the same price as my Glock.  Better depends on how they are compared.  XD is going to be lighter, easier to fieldstrip and carries more ammo, but 1911 seems to be more accurate, heavier so recoil is less and follow up shots are faster and it can be modified to whatever degree or preference you have.

springfield makes a high capacity 1911 with a double stack mag.11+1 or if you use para 45 mags you can get 14+1. if you can find one you will have some serious firepower!
