xd or 1911?

What are you going to do with it?
Unless I was LEO, I would take the 1911, in a full-size steel frame.
1911 will cost more.
Much better for sporting activities, much nicer to use.

My first carry gun was an XD sub-compact 40. I really liked that gun. Fit the hand well, shot well, never had a feeding problem, and carried pretty well. After I bought my first 1911, the XD was gone. Not that it was a bad gun, I just fell in love with the feel of an all steel gun.

If you're willing to spend the extra cash, any of the mid priced ($750+) 1911s are better guns IMO. Get one with a bobtail mainspring housing and they just disappear under a shirt. My absolute favorite carry gun was a Dan Wesson CCBT. I had to switch to a full size instead of the Commander though after hurting my wrists. I need the extra weight to make the gun comfortable to shoot.

I don't know what XDs go for, but I bought my Springfield Mil-Spec 1911 (used) for the same price as my Glock.  Better depends on how they are compared.  XD is going to be lighter, easier to fieldstrip and carries more ammo, but 1911 seems to be more accurate, heavier so recoil is less and follow up shots are faster and it can be modified to whatever degree or preference you have.

springfield makes a high capacity 1911 with a double stack mag.11+1 or if you use para 45 mags you can get 14+1. if you can find one you will have some serious firepower!

1911 because it is what I like.  It is what Uncle Sam taught me to use, and old habits die hard.  And out of respect for the genius that was John Moses Browning.
