Bark Collar

Just before I retired, We were eating lunch in one of the rooms on the job, and one of the guys told about getting a bark collar for his dog, because the neighbors were complaining about his dog barking.  He said that he bought the collar, and had it on the kitchen table while he was reading the instructions.  His teenage daughter walked in, and asked what it was.  He told her it was a Bark Collar to keep the dog from barking.  She picked it up, buckled it around her neck, and went "WOOF!".  Her eyes rolled back in her head, and she dropped to the floor, clutching her throat, going "GAK! GAK!".  He looked down at her and said:  "It works, doesn't it?"

Took us a few minutes to get the coffee out of our noses!

Years ago, when I was training my setter pup, I read in a book by a famous gun dog trainer how to break your dog of barking.  He said that a dog will bark to get attention.  It doesn't matter that the dog got the crap beat out of him after he barks--he got the reaction he wanted.  In short, HE WON!  The author went on to say that the best way to break a dog of the barking habit is to put your dog in the back of the truck, (truck with canopy preferred) and go to a restaraunt and go in and have a cup of coffee.  The dog will bark to get you to come out.  Don't go out!  Go to the door and listen to see if he's still barking.  If he is, go back and have another cup of coffee.  Go listen again.  Eventually,the dog will get the idea that his barking ploy doesn't work, and he will stop barking.  Don't go back out until the barking stops!  One lesson is usually all it takes.  From then on, you will have a dog that will never bark just to get attention.  I tried it...It works!

The reason he said to go to a restaraunt is that nobody cares if your dog is barking in a restaraunt parking lot! 

why create extra steps? skip the restaurant and just practice this at home and be consistent.

My neighbors are too close just to let him bark until he is done. I have tried and they threatened to call the police. And I asked an officer and with two complaints they can take your dog. (Which is really stupid of you ask me.)

I ignore it,I'm lucky I guess,0 neighbors,I used to have 5 neighbors but the oil company has bought all thier properties and demolished all the houses.When I did have 5 neighbors I had 1 that would complain about the barking.I installed a header pipe over the kennel with 2 sprinkler heads on it.When they decided to bark insessantly I would go turn the water on and hear the chuk chuk chuk of the sprinkler heads and boom silence.They hit the dog houses quick.

your pup has learned not to bark in the truck while at a restaurant, how did you transition to around the house? or is he not left outside unsupervised at all and never gets the opportunity to bark his head off and tick off the neighbors?

your dog sounds like the exception, but most dogs would just learn that barking in the truck doesn't get them anywhere, but at home its a different story. dogs are situational learners, thats why we have so many high energy hunting dogs with so called "off switches" in the house.

My dog was exceptional because I trained her to be that way.  She was never allowed to get any bad habits right from the start.  I grew up with dogs, and knew that once a dog got into a bad habit, it was a lot harder to break the habit.  She still barked, but only when she felt it necessary, like when she caught a cat sneaking around. (She must have sensed that I didn't want cats around)    I got her when I  had finished a job, and started building my new house, so we were pretty much "joined at the hip" when she was a pup, which I think made all the difference in the world.  15 years later, when she got so old and arthritic she had to be put down, I was so bummed out that I sold all my shotguns and never bird hunted again.

Tritronics is a great brand, I've just not used any of their products.  I also have a 2 dog Dogtra trainer, which is universal with the bark collar for charging.
