high buck hunt heat waves
« on: February 06, 2013, 07:08:41 PM »
Was wondering of anyone had problems with heat waves in there spotting scopes during the high hunt? I've been on one high buck hunt but never had a chance to use my spotting scope. Also, has anyone ever had there hiking boots soul rip out with only having one pair of boots and what did you do after the fact? Thanks

Spotting scope heat waves will occur with high power magnification. Turn the power down unless you are spotting a log distance away. If the animal is that far away you probably don't want to go after him. If you have the power turned up that high just to tell if he is legal or not the you probably don't want to shoot one that size anyhow. If I am going to pack a animal out during the high hunt it's going to be worth my effort.
Alot of people take camp shoes in that case you might wear them or take along good ol duct tape. I always wrap several wraps around my pack frame incase I need it for emergencies. :twocents:

Heat waves happen, even with the big Swarovski spotters. No way around that.

I have the duct tape wrapped around one of my hiking poles and I bring camp shoes too.

My buddy lost his sole on the last day of a 6 day back country hunt.  Duct tape for sure.  I carry 3 yards in a role that I found at Wholesale Sports.  Buying like this is more expensive but i feel like it loses some of its stickiness when wrapped a second time around a pole or a pencil or something.  Always buy fresh stuff every year.

Regarding boots - minimize the chance of your boots coming apart by buying good boots.  Second, along side the duct tape bring two small tubes of super glue.

This past season was my first high hunt, second time ever deer hunting, but not a newbie to the backcountry.  Needless to say day three my brother-in-laws "Guide Wear bla bla" Cabelas crappy boots ripped 180 degrees above his heel.  Remembering that I had brought super glue for medical emergencies (can't beat super glue for instant stitches!) I pinched the material together and glued away.  It gave him one more day of hunting and just enough time to hike the 10 miles out.

Ain't that the truth :chuckle:  You usually only do that once though.
