NM legislator introduces bill aimed at outlawing animal killing contests

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS January 31, 2013

SANTA FE, New Mexico — A southern New Mexico legislator has introduced a bill that would ban animal killing contests.

Organ Democrat Rep. Nate Cote says a recent coyote-killing contest in central New Mexico caused a public outcry and that such events must stop. He contends the contests are senseless.

His bill would criminalize organizing, causing, sponsoring, arranging or holding an animal killing contest. First-time offenders could face a civil fine of up to $1,000. Subsequent convictions could result in a year in prison and a stiffer fine.

The bill has the support of animal protection advocates.

But the owner of Gunhawk Firearms in Los Lunas, Mark Chavez, tells the Las Cruces Sun-News (http://bit.ly/VYygsW) that the bill is a disguised attack on hunting and gun rights. Chavez held a coyote-killing contest in November that attracted national attention.

If it passes in NM, then the animal rights people will push it in other states.  :yike:

I know one of the big coyote hunts is held down there every year. That would sure throw a wrench into that, if it did pass.

If it passes, then you'll hear the libs complain when they can't let their kids play in the back yard any more.
If it was easy, everybody would be doing it.

When Bernie Madoff did it, it's called a "Ponzi Scheme"
When Government does it, it's called "Social Security"

for peats sake well any surprise NM is a blue state.
"When my bow falls, so shall the world. When me heart ceases to pump blood to my body, it will all come crashing down. As a hunter, we are bound by duty, nay, bound by our very soul to this world. When a hunter dies we feel it, we sense it, and the world trembles with sorrow. When I die, so shall the world, from the shock of loosing such a great part of ones soul." Ezekiel, Okeanos Hunter

That state is ruled by two cities--Albuquerque and Santa Fe.  Mostly all city people that rarely get out into the countryside other than some 'park'.  Lots of transplants from the east coast in Santa Fe and all over for the tech industries/labs in Albuquerque.  The majority of the state lives in a tiny amount of the area, but knows best what the rest of the state should be doing...

The protest was very peaceful and the protesters cleared out before the PM hunt gathering at the sight.  I got in early and took a nap in a park overlooking the protest.  Wind gust were hitting 50mph and the protesters were having a heck of a time holding up their placards.  The PM Hunt and convention isn't a competition hunt so we had no problems with state enforcement or BLM .

The only problem is my van creeping around on the back roads near the border looking for coyote hunting spots, I think I got stopped at least once or twice a day by the Border Patrol and got asked to show them the inside of the van a couple of times.  They were all very nice and even gave me a couple of tips on where to find coyotes.  One time I was parked miles from the nearest road behind three gates having lunch and up roles 4 BP on 4wheeler.  Even ran into a Horseback BP
After the first shot the rest are just noise.

Make mine a Minaska
