Please don't mess with diesel fuel pressure unless you know what you're doing. 15-20k psi will do a lot of damage and could hurt you.

A faulty lift pump will not set codes.

Sorry, I meant a fuel pressure guage mounted in the cab.

Would an faulty injection pump set a code?

Yes there is an internal injection pump fault code.
Let me see if I can find it.

P1688 is the internal injection pump failure code. There are others but if you've got that one, its kind of a no brainer.

p0216 is another one you don't want to see.

i've dealt with many pump issues on the road to 700hp with my 2002, from starving the pump causing it to cease to having too much backpressure from the the OEM cross tubes causing it to cease. the best sure fire way to see if it's your pump or your lift pump is to loosen the return line off your VP pump. crank the truck over and if nothing comes out then chances are it's your lift pump. to tell for sure remove the banjo bolt going into your VP pump...you should only have to turn the key to the ACC position since this is the time the lift pump primes the injection pump. so if diesel does or doesn't come out of that line...well you should have your answer right there.

if you do get diesel out of your inlet and return line then i'd guess you vapor locked your injection pump. very common problem, just take a 3/4" wrench and crack loose a few fuel lines going to your head and bleed them out. but easiest way to check for any fuel is the inlet and outlet banjo bolts on the side of your injection pump. very easy to access, very easy problem to diagnose. check these yourself before you start spending any money on a mechanic/parts.

Thanks guys for the comments and suggestions.  Saltwaterhillbilly is going to look at it tomorrow for me. I got a code reader from a friend and it did throw the P0216 code of semi, possibly slow, death...Dang it   :bash:

Maybe I will be the lucky guy and it is just the lift pump but Murphy's Law usually don't treat me well.

Uggh, I hope it turns out to be something other than what the code says.
Make sure you try what Quicksilver suggested above.  That was spot on!!  He should know, after all, his truck did like eating VP's.   Finicky Mikes pumps.    :chuckle:

If the code and testing is true, there not the cheapest around, but they do stand behind their product!!  You might be able to find one for about $200 less though.....
