Just curious about what maps other people are using when hiking and hunting.  I've thought about just getting a state atlas, but they are kind of big.  I do like some of the waterproof maps at Cabelas too. What features are you looking for when you buy a map for hunting?

BLM offices sell maps that are pretty good.  I use those in combination with google.

You can spend days looking at all types of maps. Topo maps provide you with what the terrain looks like (steep, flat). Nothing beats going and looking first hand. If your going to be on Weyco land (Weyerhaueser) they have theyre own maps, Ive heard that the new ones dont have rd numbers like the old ones do. One thing I do is, buy two of the same map. You can mark areas on one map that you like and after you check that area you can decide if its worthy of putting on your other map as a "potential honey hole". Some people bounce from unit to unit and never really get to know the unit, in my opinion, consistentcy will pay off...... eventually. Once you get to know your unit, you will find that you will rarely use your map to get from Point A to B (hunting area to hunting area) and maybe even short cuts. This wont happen over night or in a season or just looking at maps. Some maps dont show rds that are there now but werent there when the map was made. If you have a GPS turn it on when your scouting/driving so when season comes and your down in some deep dank hole and you get a animal down you can drag/pack to the nearest road and drive to pick it up. Make drivable rds one color and walkables another.

I use maps from mytopo.com. They have most western states with gmu overlays. Plus you can customize them and they are on very durable paper.

Good old green trails. I also use DeLorme topos for driving around and checking out new areas.

Google earth is used alot by me. I scout the areas via sat photos and then print off the areas that I want to hunt or scout in person. It's saved me a lot of miles on foot and gas.

I am learning to make maps and have the ability to customize anything I want on the maps using ArcMap software. Powerful software thsts for sure. I use Green Trail maps quite a bit too.
