Gun shops, classifieds.  :dunno: Lot's of them for sale around here.  Hunting rig?  Target rig?  How you gonna use it?

Yes. First you need to decide which 7mm cartridge you want. There are several of them. Personally, I like the 7mm WSM.

steps for picking a rifle..

1..intended use
2..how much money are your able to spend
3..how much do you want it to weigh in at (refer back to step one)
4..how fast you'd like the lead to go (refer back to step one)
5..duration of use..is this a life long hunting partner ? or just a gun to get you into the woods

some food for thought

If you are relatively new to shooting, you may want to hook up with someone who owns one of the 7mms and send a few rounds down range.....make sure its what you are looking for.

I'm a big fan of the 7mm.  My preference is the 7 rem mag.  I prefer short throw bolts for hunting which means Sako, Weatherby MKV, Browning and a few others.  Problem is I detest 26" barrels for hunting.  My main 7mm is a Browning with a 24" barrel - dang good shooter with 140 grain bullets!  I've shot the Sako A7 a bit and it may even shoot better than my custom Browning.  Quite a few choices in 24" Weatherby 7 rem mag these days too.

I have found some tempermental behaviors in 7mm guns over the years.  Some like light bullets, some like heavy bullets and few like all bullets.  Not sure why that is :dunno:  Because of this my Custom Browning will be going off to get a new fluted match grade barrel.  I'm told that should take care of any issues.  We'll have to see.

If looking for a target rifle that might see a little hunting I'm not sure I have ever shot one better than the Remington Sendaro.  Not sure they still offer it in 7 mag, but it was a fantastic gun.  Though I would not want to carry it too far from the truck.  And certainly would not be taking many of hand shots with it.

As with any weapon it all boils down to personal preference.  Not many bad guns out there these days.  Find the one that talks to you in a seductive voice and buy her.  I'm sure your going to be happy together for many, many years to come
He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."

With that kind of budget I'd go with the Sheep Hunter
http://www.defensiveedge.net/Custom%20Rifle/custom%20rifles.htm

RBros offers rifles like that as well and is local. Good guy and great work.

i was thinking of like a max range ?? do you wana shoot elk at 1000 yards ? cuz that would force ya to have an X amount of foot pounds of wammy down range to kill..idk what your "x" is but mine is around 850 foot pounds which is achievable in the 7wsm...some people really want there elk dead so they shoot the ultras or the stw or what ever but that adds weight to the action and barrel

light an accurate are kinda hit or miss...id def stay away from the thin barrel rifles
but anything in your price range should shoot as good as you can reload

personaly id go with a stiller action, proof carbon barrel,H-S precision stock,7 wsm .. all put together by whom ever is an amazing gun smith

ITS ACTUALLY FOR MY DAD, HES THINKING 7MM MAG.

So you say he wants a magnum, but still, the question is, which one?

There is the 7mm Winchester Short Magnum, the 7mm Remington Magnum, the 7mm Remington Ultra Magnum, the 7mm STW, and a couple of others.

call Kirby at Allen Precision Shooting in Hamilton Mt.  I've had two customs built by Kirby and he is fantastic and his rifles just plain shoot.  He built my wife a custom, that is very light, extremely accurate and looks great too.
