So you say he wants a magnum, but still, the question is, which one?

There is the 7mm Winchester Short Magnum, the 7mm Remington Magnum, the 7mm Remington Ultra Magnum, the 7mm STW, and a couple of others.
SORRY, IM NOT THAT KNOWLAGABLE WHEN IT COMES TO THIS... IF I HAD TO GUESS I WOULD SAY REM MAG, OR WSM. IM TEXTING HIM BACK AND FORTH AS THIS GOES. IF IT HELPS HE TELLS ME HIS MAX RANGE IS 500 YARDS WANTS TO SHOOT FACTORY AMMO.

Max range of 500 yards and factory ammo........then he doesn't really need a $3,000 rifle.  Browning X-bolt in 7 mm Rem Mag comes to mind.  Or Savage if he doesn't mind an "ugly" rifle. :twocents:

I'd probably get a Sako in either 7mm WSM or 7mm Rem Mag, if I had that much money to spend.

Thanks, Dan-O.   :salute:

I agree with the Sako, too.  He could spend the extra coin on a really good scope too.......  :twocents:

I can say I am very happy with my Savage 111Long Range Hunter in 7mm Rem Mag.  WIth quality factory ammo it will easily handle deer and elk at 500 yards.  Great rifle deserving of higher end glass........

I wasn't really thinking with that last post. I think the first thing I would try to do is buy an American made gun. Sure I would still consider the Sako but it wouldn't be at the top of my list for that reason. I'd be looking at Savage, Remington, and possibly Ruger. No, not Winchester because I don't like the location of the safety. But that's all just personal preference. I'd also consider the custom made rifles that others have suggested.

Give Travis with RBros rifles a call.  He is a site sponsor and builds one hell of a rifle.  He is also great at answering questions.

He built me a 7mm mag and I cant wait to stretch the legs out on it this spring.

"3..how much do you want it to weigh in at (refer back to step one)
LIGHT AS POSSIBLE BUT ACCURACY IS MOST IMPORTANT."

To my way of thinking that puts the longrange hunters out of the mix.

7WSM is a great round, but the mention of factory ammo throws that one out too.  It's a shame as it is quite possibly the best of the WSM's IMO.

American made would be nice.  Problem is not many of them offer a lightweight 7 mag option unless you go custom.  I'd like to see Ruger come out with a stainless American w/ 24" barrel.  The Remington version sounds good too though I have not gotten to put my hands on one.  Dang bunghole ugly, but very affordable and accurate.  You could put $1,500.00 in glass on one and still be within budget.  Can probably still do that with the Sako.

Would sure hate to see you bust the budget on a custom gun and not be able to put some good glass on it.
He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."

Some 7's can be finiky with ammo. I'd go with a 300 wm in maybe a rem 700 long range system , always room for upgrades . the 300 gives you so many ammo options ans a 215 bullet would perform assume out to his range . topped with a vx3 .

gotta disagree abit

light guns can shoot as far as the shooter can, heavy guns just make it easier to hold steady

just takes more practice

My intent simply was most longrange hunters are anything but light.  If you want to use all capitals to express "LIGHT AS POSSIBLE BUT ACCURACY IS MOST IMPORTANT."  I interpret that as, weight is very important as long as it will still shoot accurately.  Perhaps I pay a little too much attention to cap-locks :dunno:

i was thinkn he was just using cap-locks to show his response..i was thinking you meant in order to shoot long range you must go "heavy"

my heads been in a book for the last 7 hours so ive been alil brain dead
