I owe my neighbors that much since I wouldn't put up with their dogs barking incessantly.
Years ago, when I was training my setter pup, I read in a book by a famous gun dog trainer how to break your dog of barking. He said that a dog will bark to get attention. It doesn't matter that the dog got the crap beat out of him after he barks--he got the reaction he wanted. In short, HE WON! The author went on to say that the best way to break a dog of the barking habit is to put your dog in the back of the truck, (truck with canopy preferred) and go to a restaraunt and go in and have a cup of coffee. The dog will bark to get you to come out. Don't go out! Go to the door and listen to see if he's still barking. If he is, go back and have another cup of coffee. Go listen again. Eventually, the dog will get the idea that his barking ploy doesn't work, and he will stop barking. Don't go back out until the barking stops! One lesson is usually all it takes. From then on, you will have a dog that will never bark just to get attention. I tried it...It works!
