Personal messages...
« on: September 25, 2008, 09:10:11 AM »
They are neither personal nor private.

It turns out that the administration here, has the ability to go through our PM boxes and deleted messages, and that they are going through mine!

Quote from: Billythekidrock
Your pm's to other members... are saved on CD in case the "armed men in the woods" have a "hunting accident"  (Direct quotes from your pm's) at my expense.

To me, this is a gross violation, and an extremely invasive act. >:(

I am blocking all access to my pm box, that I have the ability to (one cannot block pm's from Administrators), to save ALL of us from any future SPYING!

I highly suggest that no one use the pm feature of this site.

I call for the membership to protest these actions, and abilities, and for Ray to actually do something about this (invasion of my "privacy"), and blatant abuse of power.

And while this is true of this particular site, that they have the ability to see private messages... it's the same case on almost every bulletin board there is.
I knew this, but I didn't think it would happen, here? :dunno:

Looks like I was wrong. :(

Ray,

Look nobody can view your personal messages. You're simply misinformed. Nobody is spying on you.

The real problem with you Krusty is you cannot stop attacking people and you refuse to listen to carefully crafted personal messages from some of the admins. Instead you attack them with "*censored* off" , "*censored* you" and other such language. Admins and moderators are very tired of deleting your ridiculous personal attacks on other people who have not even solicited any discussion or response. That is multiple people and this is not a conspiracy.

Most people who acted in such a way for so long I would have banned already. However I have given you so much slack it is ridiculous.

This is another attempt at discrediting this site and our administration and moderators. If you don't like it here leave. Otherwise your antics will get you out of here soon enough. Got it?

Preach On, RAY!

You guys are doing a great job, and if my PMs are beign viewed by mods and admins, who cares?  It is part of the price I would gladly pay just to be here.

It simply is not true. Bottom line.

Go ahead and ask any of the admins or moderators. The simplemachines forum software does not have a mod for such a feature that I am aware of. Even if they did - we don't have it here. The only boards I am aware of that have such a feature are UBB.

Calm down man.  Are you sending dirty messages to women on here?  This is a private website, and as much as I have my problems with censoring/admins on this website you have a right to complain (but it appears as if they don't even have the ability so...) but you should NOT freak out like this.

I mean, are you sending honey-hole information in your PM's?  Suddenly seeing Ray in all your hunting spots? Or just talking *censored* in general in the PM's?  Do you think that the admins go through every PM that is sent? (which again they don't even have the ability)  This is not the government, this is a website.

Get Over It.

Since I quit I have lost nearly 25 pounds (almost back to college weight) and have been able to spend an immense amount of time in the woods.  If it weren't for hunting, I'd probably be back on WoW.

But ya, I was raiding two nights a week for like 4 hours each night.

+1, Rick your a great guy. I don't know what could have started this but man guys reconcile this disagreement and move on, this is a great site with some great people, not everyone is going to agree 100% of the time, god knows I'm opinionated but I will listen to others as well (doesn't mean I have to agree with them) . Lets keep this site free from personal attacks unlike like the others, thats what keeps me coming back.

+2   There are many good folks on this site that contribute positively every day. Some contribute goods and wares and others provide good sound advice and experience. There those who contribute professionaly or as sublect matter experts. All in all, I don't believe there is a better group of folks than those who participate on this site.

No one should be allowed to repeatedly attack anyone continously for any reason..

Ray, you said "nobody" can go through others pm's.  Does this include moderators and yourself?  Also whats the deal with the quote from BTKR saying that they are saved?  Just need some clarification.  Thanks

Miles, I am obviously not Ray, but every member can save their PM's to their home computer and burn them to disk if they want. In the above case, Krusty's brother had previously made threats toward BTKR. BTKR chose to burn them to disk. Some of the other things happening here is that PM's have been sent with CC's to someone else which means that it was not private at all if you cc'd someone. The Mods do a great job and don't spy. When Mods receive nasty replies from someone, they can copy and paste them for all the mods to see, still no spying....

All I will say in this is Ray(huntwa), Bearmanric, and BTKR, I have been coming here for quite awhile now. You guys have always gone above and beyond in helping everyone out as best you can. I do not know either of you personally but if ever the opportunity presents itself you would always be welcome at my fire.

I believe most people here feel the same way

I've worked in the IS industry for over 2 decades and anyone who believes there is true privacy within the electronic medium is being foolish.

I'm not saying this intending any disrespect to the moderators or Ray.  I fully believe what they say in respect to not snooping.  Just, more that people are foolish if they "assume" there is true privacy on a public type forum.  And they are being even more foolish to be upset about it.

The reality of the matter is that there this site is hosted by a private person and we all assume the risks of trusting that person to act responsibly.  Which, BTW, I believe they do here!!!  That certainly doesn't mean it holds true for other forums/sites though.  And, even if other sites owners are snooping no one really has any right to complain.... you are using and participating of your own free will.  It is their site, their equipment, etc. and they don't have to answer to anyone.

As I said before. That is not possible and the only forum software which I am aware of that does have such a feature is UBB. The moderators and admins do not have the ability to go in and view your personal messages on this site. That goes for sent or received or even deleted, unless you cc them or send it to them directly personal message are exactly that. Personal between who sends them and who is the targeted recipient(s).

It just makes me wonder if its the truth because I know they have the ability to view deleted posts. :dunno:  I guess I should ask this: Ray, can you explain to us how the personal messages are kept private?

Without even reading the rest of the thread, if it is on the net, it ain't private no matter what you do or don't do.

Based on what has been provided, it appears that the member(s) who were allegedly threatened forwarded or "copied/paste" the PM(s) to the Mod's/Admin.... so in essence, the powers that be here on the Forum are not snooping around your PM box.

Hell, dude, it's happened to me on several occasions.... e-mails too!  :chuckle:  You have to understand that if a member feels threatened here on the Forum (due to posts and or PM's), the moderators and admins are obligated to address the issue.

Via security built into the forum software in various forms. The entire simplemachines software is open source. Go to simplemachines.org for technical details on the exact structure of the database, sql queries, or even to download it and view the code, etc.

There is only one person who has direct access to the database and that is me. If the government requests information for investigation I will hear about it. Otherwise nobody's getting in.

Seems that ray says it's "impossible" yet others do not.    :dunno:

What's impossible? Others do not what?

Sites like CNN.Com get hacked all the time. Govt. computers are compromised and spies get in and steal secrets all the time.

If you think I am spying on you then go get a real life. That's what the discussion is all about. Do moderators or even admins have the ability to spy on your personal messages - no.
If that is not clear enough then who knows what is....

If you want to know about the forums limitations go find out for yourself. You don't have to believe me.

Exactly. If that is what someone thinks then they can sign off and never sign back in again. Won't hurt my feelings none.

Just watch out if you go to a UBB Forum if that sort of thing concerns you. I was an admin on them before and they have such a feature built into some of their versions which allow admins to view other people's personal message and even to "become" that user temporarily. It might make sense to have that for someone somewhere but I don't believe in it.

Lincoln.... It's DARK out and I'm not sure you're aware of any of the hunting regulations for Germany........................

the time of "night" in german hunting regulations is one half hour after sunset till one half hour before sunrise and the only animal we are aloud to hunt during that period of time is also the only hochwild that does not have a set number in each revear on how many can be shot because they can move 20 to 30 kilometers a day...... the wild boar..... im bored... .....we went over hunting horns in class today..... and i did a PMI and a load test  on a mep 9 today... and some of my CDC's..... so today wasn't very exciting.

Just so it is cleared up.

No one, neither mods or admins, can see, read, or save anyones private messages.
If you send a message to someone it can be copied and pasted or forwarded to other members.
If you want to save your pm's to your hard drive or burn them to disc you can, just like you can save anything else from the net.

UBB is the software which runs some bulletin boards on the internet http://www.ubbcentral.com/ it is not freeware and I doubt it is open source. It is good stuff though.
