Dang cougars ; Updated with cougar pictures
« on: February 16, 2013, 07:32:56 PM »
:bash:  So It's been three weeks since I checked my trail camera, and today this is what I found thirty yards from it.!!!! And not One picture of any elk or cougars on my trail cam.  Anybody that has previous success at calling cougars, let me know, I have the day off tomorrow.  I tried calling today, but didn't get any action.  I'm an extreme rookie caller and was using my new foxpro with cougar sounds, but not sure that is the best course of action.  Last time I walked in to check my camera, I was not even packing my pistol,  :bdid: That won't happen again.

I assume season is still open in your area. I would sneak in there downwind from the kill as quiet as you can, only get as close as needed for a shot, do not circle the kill, leave as little scent in the area as possible, DO NOT APPROACH THE KILL, DO NOT CALL, be quiet and let the kill work for you. I would try to watch it for a few hours in the morning and the last 3 hours in the evening. If you call the cat will know there is something different and may not come back.  :twocents:

OK so far I have done everything wrong :bash: Thank you for the advice Bearpaw. I will change my strategy and see if I can take this cat and yes the season is open in this area.  The area that this cat is in, he would be used to people and crossing roads, so I'm hoping that my presence isn't too much of a bother to him.   Anymore advice would be much appreciated.  I have a few deer distress calls on my foxpro and rabbits, but I won't do any calling near the kill.

They can take a longer than usual time at coming in so be patient. If possible have a motion decoy separate for the caller too.
Carry your hand saw with you in case you do get the cougar can salvage the horns

It looks like it's done feeding on this kill? but I'm definetly not an expert, I hope you get him. And don't leave those antlers in the woods, you bought them at a garage sale in packwood last labor day weekend!

The horns can stay for the mice and squirrels, I have plenty at home that my dogs chew on.  I'm not going to push my luck with something like that.  Not worth it.   :twocents:

I do have a sit and spin that I set up when calling.  There is only meat on one hindquarter left, so I'm not sure if he would be done at this point or not.

Thats too bad, it's a shame to leave nice anlters in the woods, but I don't blame you for leaving them since it's on the net now. It should be against the law to leave good antlers in the woods!

Well yesterday I moved my trail camera just down wind of the kill I had found.  I chose to not put it directly on the kill as I didn't want 50,000 pictures of crows, blue jays etc.  I got there this morning and it looked like it had been eaten on more.  I checked my camera and sure enough, my first ever real cougar (not a house cat)on a trail camera.  And a bonus of a bobcat a few hours later.

My first setup this morning for calling was about 1/2 mile away.  I set and called randomly for over an hour using a deer distress call.  About 30 seconds after I stood up and decided I would try a different spot, the cougar screamed at me from across a draw.   :bash:

Need some direction here. Have looked through the Game regs and can not see where it prohibits the collection of antlers from dead animals found in the wild. I found where it is Legal to possess naturally shed antlers of deer elk and moose but can NOT find anything that says you can't collect antlers from animals found dead or even where it says you can't have them.
I am not reading between the lines of the regs and if it doesn't say you can't then that means you can.....
