Wyoming points (should I be putting in)
« on: February 18, 2013, 11:39:37 AM »
Should I be putting in for any deer or elk hunts with my 4 points? I'm wondering if there are any long shots, like 1% odds that I might draw something awesome with my elk points? If there's not a chance of a OIL hunt for elk than I'd rather just sit on em. The deer odds look rather dismal unless you have max points... thoughts.

I don't follow your thinking. If there are hunts you'd like to do, and you have the time to do them this year, and the odds are greater than zero, what do you gain by sitting on points other than get a year older? :dunno:

Thanks. I was more talking about deer.
Follow my thinking. I look at the draw odds on the website and (for deer) it appears that the odds are like 18% with 6 points and then 0% for anything less than that. So it doesn't appear that there are any hunts (besides general region) that I would have a chance of drawing. Or is there a chance to be drawn in the random draw? Actually it might look like the odds are better for some hunts in the random draw than they are in the points draw...

You may have to think hard about the area you're applying for this year. The drought will effect antler growth this year in many areas. You could put in for 89 or 90 and hope to draw and put in for F or D as a second choice. You don't loose points on a second draw, or blow your points on Region G. Good luck, I wish I was in your shoes, I only have one deer point.

I feel the key to Wyoming for deer is to put in for the regional units.  We have drawn every 3rd year for the G unit and have killed several bucks that were 26 to 29 3/4 inch wide one scoring near the 190 mark.  If you wait to use those points for a 80's type unit you are wasting your time.  You need to do more research.  There are multiple regional units that produce bucks in the 24 to 30 inch range to include both G and H that only require 2 or three points to draw.  Sounds to me like you read to much Eastmans.  PM me and Ill give you some good info.

I would be insulted but you're totally right. Yes more research is always needed no matter what!! I don't read eastman's I just crunch numbers online, see where public land is, google earth, think about hypotheticals, etc. With a baby on the way this hunting season I should have plenty of time to sit at home and plan 457 possible future hunts whilst the rest of the H.W. population is out killin'  :chuckle: :chuckle:

Dug is right. You can hunt a great region in WY, G with just a few points. Once you get past 4 points its almost a waste not to wait out the hard to draw areas.
Some of those limited draw areas are not worth burning 4 points in, be careful how you use them. Both R and k can be draw with one point.
It looks like the draw odds will get worst for us NR as they cut a lot of tags in the limited and regional deer areas. Like to see H and G go to a draw for Residents also.

Bob so right you are.  I think this is the last year for 2 to 3 year wait on the G and H.  Residence are likely to have to enter the draw next year.  The only thing going for Non Res is that we support the WFG with our high price tags, and that should help out with our allocation of tags for these units.  I perdict 3 to 6 points to draw these two units in the future.
