HELP new to turkey hunting 2013 season
« on: February 19, 2013, 01:08:50 PM »
i lived in alaska for 20 years , did  your average amount of hunting to most alaskans.
i recentley moved to washington state, federal way to be more acurate.
a buddy of mine told me about turkey hunting  and it sounds like a blast.

so with that in mind , what am i  to expect?  where should i go ? should i get a guide?
do i just wing it?   what kind of gear  do i " need" ?   well...... aside from the obvious stuff like a shotgun, and camos

guys  ANY tips on what to bring or where to go whould help a lot

 thx, apex

Welcome to the site Apex!
Lots of questions there-couple of ways to go about it.  Attend some of the seminars that will start showing up, get some good DVD's and books and check out the WDFW harvest report for best GMU"S.  OR you could book a hunt with one the the guides on the site (Bearpaw, YJ both come with good recomends)  Turkey hunting has several subtle differences from big game hunting and personally I've found it's almost harder to teach a die hard big game hunter than it is a rookie.  It's a great sport and happens at a great time of year (by April many of us are dying of cabin fever).  Kind of difficult to answer all of your questions, would be like someone asking how, what, where on moose hunting in Alaska.  Now is the time to get out and start scouting and  finding birds.  Should be a lot of tips showing up on the site as we get closer to the opener.  Good luck!!

I live nearly in Federal Way (Northeast Tacoma)- shoot me a pm with a contact number and perhaps I can meet you for a cold one and help you out a bit.

Attend the Cabelas-Tulalip turkey hunting basics seminar on  Mar 16th.

Rio Grandes are located in SE Wa & North Lincoln County.  That said North Lincoln is mostly private land.   The greatest thunderchicken populations are the Merriams with most of the states harvest of all birds (2/3 or better) in NE Wa.
