Well, you requested that we decide, so I will offer my own humble opinion.  I cannot fault you for anything that you did.

OK, being caught out twice (once without the bow, the second time unprepared in the clear cut) must sting a bit; I will grant you that.  And, the others' advice about waiting to check up on the wounded animal might be very good advice.  However, you have spent enough time chewing over this, and this will only make you a better hunter (conservationist, if you know what I mean).

Buck up, practice some more, and we (won't) see you in the woods next season!

Coastal that was a great story and I know it was hard to post it up and I know you feel guilty about wounding a bull.  But thank you for posting it up.  It taught me something and I'm sure others on here have learned something as well.

Your reasons for archery hunting and how you feel about staying connected is such a positive reason to take up archery.  People like you give bowhunting a good name and make it a better community.

I have talked to a few guys that have had the same results with the montecs. They look like awesome heads :dunno:

That's good to know.  Most people I've talked to had good things to say about them, but I have no actual experience to draw from.  Aside from the noise, they seem to fly great and hold an edge after practicing.  I've considered switching to mechanical since we're not restricted, but I've been cautioned about the cons.

Lots and lots of elk are killed every year in Montana, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, California, Utah, Nevada using mechanicals. If you pick a good one you'll be fine.  Just like everything shot placement is the most important thing. A cheapo dull broadhead put through both lungs will kill an elk faster than an expensive super Sharp broadhead put through the guts.

While my brand of choice for elk is Slick Trick 125's.  For deer I am using the Swhacker Broadheads and they are a great mechanical head.  If I was in a state where I could use mechanicals I would have no qualms about using them on elk.  :twocents:

If it were me and I wounded an elk, my tag would be punched for the year.  I would have taken the rest of the season to search.

You did everything you could to try and find the elk but it happens.
