Wyoming Region K Deer
« on: February 20, 2013, 07:43:00 PM »
Anyone hunt region K for deer?  I'm trying to plan a deer hunt for my dad and brother and wondering if this would make for a decent hunt.  My dad is almost 70, so we are looking for areas that offer hunting close to roads as well as a little hiking.  The thing I like the most about this region is that it opens on Oct. 1, which doesn't get in the way of any of our hunting here.  Thanks for any advise.

A lot of K is private land.  I heard that the best HMA that has been open in the past will not be open this year.  An outfitter has leased it up.  I would look at a different region.  Maybe W?  If you hunt W I would hunt unit 82.  Not what it use to be but show me a general season unit in any state that is.  Or if you have a couple points draw G or H.  Both units have some lower country that nice bucks get killed out of every year. Plus you might be able to do a combo deer/antelope hunt if you have antelope points.  Or you could stick with K, if you would be happy with a small 3x3.

Better to go for points only in July for Wyoming

I did a bunch of research on this region and came to the same conclusion, too much private land to deal with. You may want to give D or F a try.

According to the Wyoming web page, only one of the units within the region has public access problems.  I've never set foot in the state, so I'm not sure what to think. :dunno:
The other region I'm leaning towards is H.  It seems to offer a good variation in terrain, even though a good portion is wilderness.  The success rates look decent (they all look great compared to our state).
We have one point, so should be able to draw.
I'm sure any of the regions will make for a fun hunt, so it really doesn't matter.  Just looking forward to paying the old man back for all the times he took me hunting.

I haven't hunted the other units, but I hunted H in 2011.  Awesome time in some unbelievable country, but tough hunt after the winterkill in 2010.  We're planning on G this year, but I'd have no problems going back to H.

Region H ahs a lot of steep terrain and may not be the best place for your dad.

The steepness of region H, along with all the wilderness, was what initially got me looking at other untits.  I would assume though, that there are some lower, easier areas to hunt.  It looks like a large area.  My dad is still in decent shape and loves to be out of the truck, actually hunting.  What specific units in H are particularly steep?

The ones closes to ID are the steepest. The farther SE you go the less steep it is for the most part. Some of H is antelope country.

I hunted H in 2009 and 2010 and it was steep, mean, and FULL of deer.  Great time - would recommend it to anyone up for an adventure in some of the most beautiful country you have ever seen.  Planning on G this year.

I gave my dad copies of all the information I've been able to gather about both regions (all hunting info from Wyoming website) as well as everything I've read on forums, and told him to make a decision.

Why the switch to G?
I like the sound of FULL of deer.  Is there any particular unit in H we should focus on?

Those pics look like they came right out of Mike Eastmans book Hunting High Country Mule Deer.
