What scope for a .338 lapua?
« on: February 23, 2013, 12:47:59 PM »
My friend just got a remington xcr tactical. Which scope would you guys put on it? Looking at paying up to $3000. NO Swarovski I have been around two and they are not very durable. We have been talking about Night Force.

Surprised no opinions. We have narrowed it down to the  night force beast 5x25.56 f1.  and Schmidt and Bender 5-25x56 pm II/LP/MTC. First focal plane in moa. Any thoughts?

I would go with the Nightforce.  I have a buddy in the Colville area that does a lot of long range shooting and he swears by his.  He owns 3 (maybe 4 now, he buys a new one every year with his tax refund... :chuckle:), including the one topping his .416 Barrett.  I have shot that rifle out to 2,000 yards and he has shot beyond.

I run a 8.5-25 VX3 LR with turrets on my 340wby which is very close to the 338 lap. Heck of a lot less money and still a great long range scope.

Go with a NF.  You won't be disappointed.  Choose the model you like best. ;)

Well my buddy decided to go with the nightforce nxs 5-22x50. I did learn some stuff while researching scopes. They suggested first focal plane for long distance shooting. This allows retical marks to be the same windage and yardage at any power. Where second focal plane you have to be at 10 power for most scopes. People don't like it because the retical magnifies with the power change. The only problem with first focal plane is only the most expensive scopes have first focal plane and if you were willing to spend the $3200 for the Nightforce beast scope you can't find them in stock any where. Another good scope we found was the Schmidt and Bender but they were $400 dollars more than the Nightforce.

You won't be disappointed with the nf.  Second focal is fine for longrange work.  Hopefully he got the npr1 reticle.  It is fine enough for detail work.  The only front focal scope I have is the schmidt & bender on my comp gun.  Since we have to shoot on a lot of different power ranges its almost mandatory.  All the rest have nf on them.

Well my buddy changed his mind on the scope and bought a Bushnell 6500 elite with a mil dot retical for $1300  :bash: :bash: I feel that he made a mistake, any thoughts on this scope?

To each his own, but $1300 spent on any Bushnell is beyond crazy in my mind when there's several other choices in that near price range. :twocents:

Well, let us know how that works out for him.  Maybe a $1,300 Bushnell is worth it.  I don't know, I have never seen one...
I don't think I would have gone that way, but then again I was shopping for Leupold Gold Ring binoculars when I bought my Zen Ray EDs for half the price, and they are every bit as good....so... :dunno:

Let us know what your buddy thinks of it. I have been doing research on a higher mangnification scope for a mountain gun and I'm leaning towards a bushell elite 6500 2.5-16x42. They have a great warranty and a couple buddies use them for long range shooting and really like them.

I hope your friend's Bushnell works out for him.  My son bought the 6500 Elite a couple years ago, he had to go through 3 scopes to get one without significant defects and his experiences with their customer support were terrible and slow.  It turned me off to anything Bushnell, but then again asking about scope brands is about like asking Ford, Chevy or Dodge - you're gonna get a lot of opinions.  Nightforce is always a great scope option and just recently I got to use a Vortex Razor, I was very very impressed with the Razor.

i have a nightforce 5.5-22x56 with np-r1 reticle on my .338 TRG 42 and after seeing and using a nightforce scope....makes me wonder why you'd get anything else (unless you're paying more)...i know he downgraded by buying the bushnell but hey...maybe it will workout alright for him.

buddy just put a custom US optics on his lappy trg. Got the windage adjustment turret put on the left side. it's pretty slick.

nxs is no joke either. once you are up to that price range, might as well start looking at going the extra mile for a PMII.

My buddy is getting ready for a shoot in poland. I was gonna go be his spotter but the guvmint got me doing something else.

nightforce, S&B, USO, etc...they're all top class scopes. i don't think you could go wrong either way. i'd still love to put them side by side and take a look.

All of them track well, none of them broke, but the schmidty glass was head and shoulders above the competition.

EXACTLY!!!  Don't have to dial elevation, and windage is right there.  No guessing like a mil-dot.

I'm more of a Kahles fan myself, glass seems brighter somehow, but that's just me.

I have a NF 3.5-15x50 F1 woth MLR reticle (it the army spec version), works great for my needs. Has enough adjustment to allow any supersonic shot with my 270..IMHO, this scope is kinda overkill for my application, but on a 338L, it would be perfect. I have at times had to back it down to 10-11 power to get rid of mirage, so I honestly do not see the need for a scope with more magnification than 15 power...
