My Facebook feed is full of "professional" fishermen posting pics of steelhead this time of year, many of them big natives and majority of them out of water. Not saying its right, but it absolutely happens, and often.

Just wondering, how many people saying let that fish go if he's dead he is no longer in the gene pool try to go kill the biggest buck or bull every year and take it out of the gene pool?  Next time take a picture if that buck instead of shooting him, but make sure not to lift him off the ground for the pic!  Btw nice fish and pic

I honestly have NO problem taking a fish out of the water briefly for a picture. Even though you can take excellent photos of the fish while it still remains partially in the water. I'll add some for reference if anyone wants, they won't have April Vokey in them though 

 I think as long as the fish is properly supported (guy doesn't have a finger in the gills, or a hand halfway up the stomach causing the fish to bend in half) and is lifted from the water, snap photo, back in the water, there are no problems. I also make sure that the fish has had time to relax after landing it. Its amazing what 45 seconds in a net with their head in the current will do for a fish that just battled for 5 minutes. Let him recoup, take your photo, let him swim.

The law wasn't put in place because lifting the fish from the water kills them, we all know that. Those fish are way tougher than we give them credit for. It was put in place to at least minimize the abuse from people that have absolutely no clue how to handle a fish.
