Lake Bonaparte Gobblers
«
on:

I will be opening up my shack just south of Lake Bonaparte in late April and was wondering if anyone has hunted turkeys up that way?? There's good cover and a few creeks around that should be good turkey habitat. Anyone hunted the forest service ground just above it? Not looking for honey holes, just I'm 800 miles away and can't scout very well, and want to know if it's worth donating the tag money.
Thanks

I hunted up there years back in May. My brother had seen a tom the previous year while on a fishing trip just after the season not far from the resort. We gave it a try the next year. We only saw minimal sign and didn't locate any birds. The locals said they see them in Torado cr. area but we didn't find much on the public land around there either. Ended up moving over to Stevens county to salvage the hunt. That was quite a few years back, flocks may have shifted but its not a place I would focus on again. Theres definately birds in Ferry and Okanogan counties but they have eluded me over the years.

I fished twin lakes out of inch all the time and there are tons of turkeys there so I don't see why you couldn't find birds to chase around Bonaparte.

Where's Twin Lakes in relationship to Bonaparte? I heard some turkeys last spring on the morning I left, but of course! They sounded like they were on some private land off the road below the lake.

I see them on Toroda crk. rd. all the time, so I don't see why they couldn't be located up toward Bonaparte?

I'll poke around Toroda Creek a bit, there's some FS land just to the east. I'll also work the south and north end of the lake. If anybody has any better ideas, I'll gladly listen. Thanks for the replies so far.

The Twin Lakes reference makes no sense to me, when talking about the Bonaparte turkeys. That's be like comparing the Desert Unit muleys to the Douglas County muleys, lol. Anyhow, there are turkeys around Bonaparte, buy scouting them preseason will be the biggest factor for success. With a limited amount of birds, and lots of the same terrain and good habitat, the birds could be anywhere, and usually are. Personally, I'd be looking in the puclic ground just above the farm lands.

We tried that area two years ago on opening day and there was alot of snow, ths year that area has been hit hard by snow so I imagine that it will be difficult.
