No need to hurry they are super fun for C&R...  Big C of course, there are other areas too.  My favorite place is the Willamette (all C&R) in Portland...  Tackle, well a couple different options one set up for keepers and one set up for Oversized...  Oversized - I trust the Ugly Stick Tiger sticks in heavy action, for keeper look for a rod that has a fast tip for detecting bites, mainly in winter as summer normally is a no brainer when they are biting... But ensure it still has the balls to handle that OS if you by chance hook into one.  I see a lot of guys using heavy salmon gear- but they can't handle that occasional OS.  Give these fish respect and use heavy 65-80lb test braid, so you do not break off and have a fish carry your line and leader out their vent holes...  I have gone to Shimano Trevala rods for all my rods now, the med light with fast tip for Keepers and the XXH rods for OS...  Reels now use Avet 6/4 and 5.8 reels..  But my boat reels are 55 series for OS and 30 series for Keepers.. All with 80lb braid.

Hmmmm. Keeper sturdy. Go something in the 10 to 40 line class, 1 to 8 oz weight, slow to moderate action. Fast rods were made for pullin plugs. You want something that doesn't pull back.  ;)

Great sturgeon fishing........hmmmm

It's been a tough year for me.  Last year, by this time I had landed 40-50 fish from 28" to 7' 10" and no keepers.  This year has been terrible.  I went out yesterday afternoon and had not caught a fish yet this year!  However, I ended up missing 2, landed a shaker and caught a 45" keeper. :IBCOOL:

If you are new to it, I'd suggest a guide.  It may be cheaper in the long run until you figure out just how to fish them.

sturgeon fishing is over! I'd reconmend not investing any time or money getting started in what's left of the fishery. What fish are left shouldn't be harassed by the C&R boys either. They need to keep strong so they have a chance to fight their way through the nets :twocents: :bash:

The Frasier River in B.C. has been C & R for a long time and that has turned into a world class fishery. I think the Columbia should have went that way already before the complete fall out of the fishery like has finally happened.
