Locator calls

I couldn't stand it any longer. I had to go out to the trailer and get all the calls out to play with. I have been practicing with the new mouth calls for a week or two but it was time to get the rest going. I can't for the life of me remember how to make coyote sounds out of my pileated woodpecker/peacock call. Help anyone.

In  my opinion if I'm going to use a coyote howl I will use an actual howler.  The only reason is if I'm using a howler its to get distance across canyons for example howling out of woodpecker call doesn't get the volume I like.  But if you want to use that call blow it  just just like a howler.

thats all i usually use ...it just takes good lungs & alot of air  You have to build up alot of air before letting off ....Sharp Ka hehehehehehehe if that helps

Thanks guys. I was actually thinking of getting a coyote howler and giving this call to my wife. I'm not sure why though, I have yet had a turkey gobble at a locator. Crushed pop cans and closing truck doors now that's a different thing, but never a locator.

I get great results with a crow call.....and only use it at sun down to find roosting birds and before fly down.....but not before fly down if I already located roosting birds.....then its silent entry 45 minutes before light and set up deeks and get ready..

Elk bugles actually work really good for locators too. The carry a long ways too.

Good loud crow call is what I use. Seems to work ok. Sometimes a loud yelp but I don't like to use a gen call to locate them.

I picked up a crow and a coyote call today. Like the crow so far, not sure on the coyote. It is really loud though.

Those poor turkeys are about to hear all sorts of wildlife that they haven't heard recently.  :chuckle.  I can't wait!

Coyote howl works the best but only use it when their in the roost.

I really like my Faulks Crow call.

Mix it up and throw in a owl call with the howler and crow. I have often found that some birds will only respond to certain sounds. 1 bird in particular that I listened to, would only gobble at a local farm cow moooing, but would not answer any locator call.

Coyote howl works the best but only use it when their in the roost.

Coyote howls work but to say they are the best is funny.
The BEST call is whatever happens to work the time you use it.

You say to only use it on the roost so how can it be the BEST call to get a shock gobble.
I can use a crow, owl, hawk, elk, goose call anytime of the day so all of them must be better.
Any loud or sudden noise will work to get a responce/shock gobble and some days one sound will work better than others.
Take lots of call to the field and improve your odds.

OK lets see if i have this right? As i am getting in the area before light i use the crow call and listen for them to sound off? So they are roosted before light and when the sun comes up you want to be in the general area that they are roosting. Then catch them when they fly down to feed for the day. do they only roost at night?Do they feed and move around all day? Last year was my first time and i think i was on the Hill late, but i did see some in that area during early archery elk.
