Blacktail Trophy Tactics II
« on: March 06, 2013, 01:38:05 PM »
So I was going to order Boyd Iverson's Blacktail Trophy Tactics II, but then read a review on Amazon that stopped me. The reviewer said that it's almost all tree-stand hunting, and only one chapter on still hunting. I plan on still hunting - will this book be good for me? Or should I look for something else?

The book rocks!
Tree stand or not you wont be able to put it down. There is sooooo much more info in there than tree stands. Because figureing out were to put your treestand is the key to success!!!!

I really thought the first book was better though. And its easy to find used on Amazon. I was able to find an autographed copy for 7 bucks from a book store in Portland.

I literally just ordered both books on amazon last night. I have Trophy Blacktails by Scott Haugen which is alright but I hear about Boyd Iversons books a lot more. I paid 5.55 used for the first books and 17 something used for the second book.

I have both books and find both to be equally informative. Both books re-enforce each other and both offer information not covered in detail in the other book. I would suggest they are both books a must read for every blacktail hunter.

correct me if im wrong, i think there is only one chapter on tree stand hunting... He mainly focuses on still hunting. I havent read it in a year or two.

In Trophy Tactics II, there is one segment on tree stand placement/hunting and one chapter on still hunting. I don't recall reading anything about other methods, whereas Haugen's book discusses ground blinds, party drives and everything in between. While Iverson's book primarily focuses on two hunting strategies, the review you mention misrepresents the spirit, focus and totality of this book. Trophy Tactics II explores scouting, hunting strategies, maps and internet study, controlling human odors, the importance of wind direction for both hunting strategies and analyzing deer behavior, ballistics, ethics, and even includes an explanation of scoring trophy racks. Iverson relates that he is a still hunter at heart, but subsequent to his focus on trophy bucks, he has employed tree stands almost exclusively.  Haugen's book is worth reading, but Iverson's book is PACKED with information. I'll read a paragraph, then go back and read it twice again, reflecting on the area I'm currently scouting.

Good books! Worth a read and a refresher right before the season starts. I marked a lot of the spots with the pertinent info in it as he can get a little too informative at times but it's all good.
