Pearrygin controlled late hunt tag
«

My son drew a coveted Pearrygin tag for the upcoming season. I've hunted the area a few times and have taken two smaller four points during general season. I'm hoping someone on here (I imagine there is) has had the late buck tag before and can offer any advice or thoughts on how to approach the late hunt. We've always hunted between Pearrygin and Bear creek the last few days of the season (before they shortened it). We took the horses and packed a camp up high and had pretty good success as the rut was just getting started; depending on the year. Do you think a guy should bring the ponies over and pack a camp in up high or do the bucks tend to be lower during the late hunt and more concentrated in the lowland flats??? I imagine it depends quite a bit on the weather but was hoping someone could offer up their two cents. Thanks in advance

Good tag to have. I too have put in for this tag and hunted this unit several times. I was in that area a week before archery season opened and really struggled to find some nice deer. They are in there, just a little shy this year.
Will this be your sons first deer. If so hold out and get him a wall hanger.
should be easy if the weather is in your favor.

Sounds like your doing the right thing.....I'd also check out pipestone canyon that last week.....there are some toads that hang on the private property around there.

Blacktailer, if I had that tag and horses, I would come in from the Volstad Creek side and ride up towards the backside of the same area (between Bear Creek and Pearygin) if you look at google earth you can see what I mean. Be prepared for snow on the late hunt.

That is a real nice tag to have. I put in for it every year and never get it. But i must admit i must be totally missing the boat on what everyone is saying. All's i am hearing is how the numbers are down and how bad the hunting is going to be?
We have a spot where our family has been going for years and i was over there 2 weeks ago scouting around and cutting some wood in prep for the the upcoming season. I have seen more deer over there than any year i can remember. I even read last night in the washington/oregon hunting magazine how the Chewuch and Perryigin areas are on the rebound from the big fire a few years back. Anyways just my thought! Good luck to everyone this year. 11 more days!!!!

Thanks for the info guys. I'll have to investigate a little more regarding Volstad Creek and Pipestone Canyon. He shot his first deer on the lsat day of the season last Fall. No buster to say the least but a good deer to start out with and Dad could not have been any prouder!!! We will try and hold out for something pretty good depending on conditions and what the deer are doing. I also have to keep in mind time out of school for him and getting him in good position with a good rest for a shot. I think I would have a few more options and would be fussier if I was the one holding the tag. I'm not too concerned about the lack of local deer around. I think most of those late season bucks are not local deer; if they are, they're holed up tight during general season . I could be wrong; who knows. I'll let you guys know how it goes in about six weeks. Here is a picture of Scout's first buck. He was 11 at the time.

PM sent as well, and don't worry about nothing being in there right now, its wintering ground and they wont show for quite some time yet
