Crazy...
« on: June 22, 2010, 10:40:49 PM »
Right now I am looking at the 1984 OIL tag "winners" sheet.  I wish I could go back in time....

Moose
Unit 1 - 3 permits - 721 applicants - .4% chance

Sheep
Unit 5 - Umtanum - 3 permits - 25 applicants - 12% chance

Unit 6 - Murray -5 permits - 80 applicants - 6.3% chance

Goat
Unit 3 - Castle Mtn. - 5 permits - 34 applicants - 15% chance

Unit 27 - Goat Mtn. & Davis Mtn. - 10 permits - 56 applicants - 18% chance

Unit 31 - Barometer Mtn. - 2 permits - 2 applicants - 100% chance

Unit 33 - Whitechuck - 20 permits - 43 applicants - 47% chance

Unit 36 - Clear Creek - 15 permits - 37 applicants - 41% chance

Unit 41 - Elwah River - 10 permits - 21 applicants - 48% chance

Unit 42 - Quilcene - 25 permits - 70 applicants - 36% chance

Unit 43 - Hamma Hamma - 10 permits - 38 applicants - 26% chance

Pretty crazy huh?  Things change fast, I wish I could go back in time.   In 1984, my dad drew the Murray Sheep tag, and drew a rifle goat tag.  There were 50 different goat units, and 448 goat tags, with only with a total of 2,724 applicants.  The good 'ol days.

No kidding. I miss those days. No Internet. Most guys would forget to apply, or atleast not worry about missing a year... "I'll just apply next year..."

Yep, those days are gone. Once wildlife finds out how much cash they can shake out of the average hunter then the amount of guys applying may lessen... In the mean time, they seem to be succeeded in selling off most of the game herds in this state, companies locking up all the land, the wolves are becoming more secure in their infestation of the region, and the antis are having continued success in pitting the public against hunters.... Will my children be able to pass a hunting heritage off onto their kids?

Two other factors also contributed to this, you had the front the cash upfront and no point system.  Once the point system started we all became hooked like crack on these things.  I remember an article in a WA/Or game and fish magazine, late mule deer rut hunts had a 25% chance of drawing, alot of units had 100 tags and 400 apps.

Before the point system came, my dad drew five goat tags, and a sheep tag.  Their rule was after you got a goat tag, you had to wait four years, but he got one the year before the point system came, and they let him apply the next year so he wouldn't get behind in the point system, so that year he drew the Gardner goat tag.  Lucky bugger.

UNLESS, I come come up with the money for the goveners tag.  Which I would do before paying for a guided hunt in BC or Alaska.
