49 Moose Hunt 2008 (PA BEN)
«

Back at Mom's this morning, 9/29/08, the lack of sleep has taken it's tole on me.
No scouting until tonight, going to Colville to resupply and look at the head mount I posted of the 54" bull. Saturday was a long day, up at 2 am, pulled in about noon, unloaded my pickup and off to the hills. Called a buddy who is muzzle loader elk hunting, he was out scouting, so we met up at 5 am Sunday to scout for moose and elk for him. After we got to our area we stopped and bugled no answer. I then bull called and cow called didn't hear an answer either. We drove to the area at the top of the mountain where I decided to start my scouting. As we walked out I glassed the meadow where I call, and saw 5 moose, it was a least 4 miles away but one was real big. Couldn't tell his horn size with my 10x42's, don't know if they came to my calls or not. I then bull called and glassed the moose below, I then heard a bull grunt to my left about 200 yd's away.
This was way cool. I racked the brush and grunted back, he answered right away, and I could hear him beating the brush. I then cow called, his grunts were very loud now and boy did he beat the brush. I have to say, this was way, way, cool. Didn't want to bump him so we backed out. Not bad for the first hr. of day light. We did about 8 miles, GPS'ed some waypoints in this area, so I can find a closer way in. It's all behind gates. Saw one more cow as we drove out. Didn't see any moose last night, got to bed late. One thing I do know, after talking to my friends, these alot of 50" bulls running around.
I talked to a wood cutter about two good bulls, but there North of Hwy. 20, out of 49 unit. More to come.

Personally I think it kicks elk hunting in the ass. Probably why I spent more time talking moose than elk this last hunt. They fired early this year. They are already going full bore. LOVE IT! Good luck PA!

Out to moose camp today. I'll check in a few days, hopefully with pictures of a 50" + bull.

Good Luck!! Remember to find a good wallow with fresh pee and take a quick roll for added mojo.

Good luck to all of the moose tag holders! It looks like mother nature isnt quite cooperating for the opener tomorrow as temps will be in the mid 80s but it looks much better going into the weekend.
I have about a hour left of work then im heading north in my quest for the big one. I do have to say that this has been one of the longest days of my life and I cant wait to see what tomorrow and the next few weeks bring.

They were hot in North Idaho and just east of Spokane. they fired about 2 weeks early. Should be a great opener. Should have at least a bull or two a day to look over.
