What do you think? I like the idea, but worry about how Obama care may change the definition of "mental illness"

“We have legislation that will make sure that in the future, people who find themselves in this legal category of having gone to a federal court and plead not guilty by reason of insanity, having been … judged by (a) federal court to be dangerous to themselves and others, would no longer be able legally to pass a background check,” he said. “There are a lot of emotions about the gun violence issue. But I am hopeful this (is) one area where we can find tremendous bipartisan support to fix what I think is a gaping gap in our law.”

This bill would expand the scope of the current federal database – the National Instant Criminal Background Check System – to flag individuals who have used an insanity defense, were ruled by a court to be dangerous, or were committed by a court to mental health treatment.

It includes, for example, individuals found not guilty because of mental illness in a criminal case, those “found guilty but mentally ill,” and people found “incompetent to stand trial,” according to a summary of the legislation provided to reporters by Graham’s office.

If I am reading this correctly this only applies to federal courts. Outside of crimes occuring on military bases and indian reservations most federal crimes aren't really of any violence nature, and the ones that are, are very heinous (terrorism, multi-state serial killer.) Your "everyday" murder, rape, etc. trial isn't going to be in federal court. To me this doesn't really "help" at all. Sure it may prevent some from being able to get guns, but to me it would be like saying WA now requires background checks on all guns....but only those sold in Ferry County. Sounds good, but is it really effective?

i guess but gota give something. my concern though is for the veterens that have been demed with ptsd and are now getting letters to disarm. also wasn't lanza denyied under the current nics system? But if we gota give something this one may not be too bad.

They have been trying to get people to accept partial disability  for PSD for the same reason...

Back in the 60's there were no FFL's, no background checks. no prohibited persons, and a lot fewer rights infringed.

Mass shootings,  and crimes committed with firearms, were no more of a problem then they are now.  Actually, it is probably more of a problem now, even with all of the restrictions.

Those that would use a weapon to harm themselves or their neighbor, will, with wahtever tool is available.  Legal restrictions will not, and never have, made any difference.  Laws only effect law abiding citizens.  Those that would would not abide by the law, do not care what the law is. 

Why would you possibly make a normally law abiding citizen a criminal by infringing on his or her RIGHT to arms?

People like yourself need to speak up and teach the youngsters. problem is libs don't care about truth for they distort it to their wants and needs.
strike that NRA should not back any of this crap. Looks like their compromising again like they did under Clinton.
Yep I see a pattern here bring in mire infringments mean more crime more crim means more anti second ammendment crap.
The more they can keep their agenda going the more they like it.
