Cleaning a skull plate
« on: March 09, 2013, 11:19:57 AM »
I have a set of antlers that I want to do a shoulder mount with. But I didn't plan on it before so never cleaned the skull plate. Needless to say the jerky strips I have dried on the skull don't come off very easy ;) anybody have a good way to clean it off?

I ran  one through the dish washer once came out nice and clean and what wasn't off peeled right off or I could get off with a pocket knife.

Boil water then add dawn detergent and then set skull in the water until the meat/hair etc. becomes loose enough to cut or scrape off. Once all the meat is off I put borax on the skull plate for a couple of days and then you will be good to go.

There are much easier ways.

They are elk antlers so boiling is going to be real tough.

This was an easy fix back when I had bugs, they would chew it off as long as it was all they had to eat. Hopefully you learned your lesson from letting the hide harden up on the skull plate... you just need to soften up the hide and skin it off. Still not gonna be a lot of fun its much easier to do when its still fresh.
