.300 win mag or .7mm build?..
« on: March 09, 2013, 10:17:50 PM »
I am trying to decide which caliber to build?  I was going to have Benchmark barrels build me a custom gun for big game hunting with accuracy to get me to 500 yards or less.  Which would be the better caliber to work with?

Both would be great. I'm partial to 7mag, but would like to own a 300 wim mag in the future. From my understanding both calibers are about the same in performance, with the 300 having a slight edge.

If you are going to build one why not combine them, 7mm/300wsm.

Either would be fine for the range you mentioned, if I was only going to 500 yards. I would opt for a 7mm chambering. Any further I would opt for the .300, better to have all your basses cover. Once your to 500, chances are your going to take it further. Benchmark is a top notch place and has build their share of rifles for me and some good friends, super accurate rifles. 7mm will get you to 160gr bullets, heavier in the customs, the 300 has a much larger bullet selection and both have recoil on par with each other. Take a good hard look at the .300 Winnie, it's proven it's place in the long range game for many years.

Here's a 300 yard group out of the last rifle Benchmark built me(.338 Edge). They are going to be doing my .375 CheyTac barrel.

That .375 Cheytac sounds like a nice round, I've been contemplating another .408 myself.

Thanks for the info.  I have purchased both a .7mm and .300 win mag in the Remington 700.  Just trying to decide which caliber to invest the $2,500+ into.  I will also do some more research on it.  I currently purchased a Zeiss 4x14 z-800 to top it with, but started looking at a Night Force possibly.

The NightForce is a excellent choice , find a dealer and take a look at them hands on. Some shops carry Vortex due to the fact they can't or couldnt carry the NightForce contract. They are night and day different for the money. With NightForce, you get what you pay for.

There you have it. You need to compare, side by side and do the homework..I've owned many of both. Currently shooting Razors on all my guns!
.Then you decide. For 500 yards tho, your Ziess would work fine!

Properly built, the 7 rem mag will outperform the 300 past the 500 mark.  Out to that they are pretty equal.  Look at as much glass as you can and decide what fits your eye the best.  If you are ever in my area let me know.  I have everything from vortex to Schmidt and Bender to look through.

I really dont see the need to go custom if your only shooting out to 500  :dunno: Then again if you have the money go for it! Id prolly go with the 7mm myself.

I'm getting a 7mm rem mag built there right now.  Should be done by the end of may. their wait times are about 4 months right now. The benchmark guys are pretty partial to the 7mm and know what their talking about. I'd talk to them if you haven't already.
